Un libro con dos destinos que se cruzan, dos personas muy diferentes, todo les separa. Sin embargo, se cruzarán, se amarán y se odiarán. La vida nunca es una carretera recta.

El inicio de la historia comienza en Laredo, una ciudad de Texas. Si cruzamos la calle estamos en México. La elección de la ciudad no es insignificante, el extranjero o el futuro migrante es tu vecino. A unos pasos de distancia, México ha establecido una nueva ciudad, la nueva Laredo. El migrante no caminó miles de kilómetros, vivía al otro lado de la calle.
Alejandro es hijo de migrantes, sus padres son mexicanos y él también, vivían a unos cincuenta kilómetros de Laredo. Sorprende mencionar a los migrantes en Estados Unidos, aparte de los nativos americanos, todos los habitantes son migrantes o descendientes de migrantes. El término resalta el desprecio. Hablamos de italoamericanos, pero nunca de irlandesesamericanos. Las palabras que utilizamos, la elección de los términos tiene un significado.

Laredo, Estados Unidos es el país de la complacencia, no mueres de hambre si trabajas, tus hijos en la escuela, la american way life les permitirá hacerse ricos, y disfrutar de todos los placeres de la vida.

Priscilla es una chica americana, desciende de inmigrantes ingleses que llegaron aquí hace varios siglos. Rubia, ojos verdes, sin duda posible sobre sus orígenes. Sus padres son parte de la clase media, observan a México con empatía. Pero los hijos de inmigrantes del Sur los exasperan. No quieren integrarse a la sociedad estadounidense. 'Viven en clanes, como lo harían los animales.

Un día, ella come un helado en un camino que no lleva a ninguna parte, probablemente en California, Alejandro se sienta a su lado, la acosa para conseguir un beso. Él decide que ella es su novia. Ella no responde, es tímida y no se atreve a imponerse. Unos días después, él le presenta a sus padres, quienes la invitan a comer el próximo domingo. Ella no se atreve a decir que no.

Una mañana aparece James. Priscilla lo ama, tiene granos y ella lo encuentra muy guapo. Alejandro se vuelve loco. Entra en crisis. James le robó a su novia, ella le pertenece.

Alejandro tras un gran error es condenado a diez años de prisión, para gran alivio de los dos amantes.

Sale de la cárcel.

Unos días después, Priscilla se da cuenta de que en Laredo la vida se ha detenido. Nadie vio, ni siquiera un perro o un pájaro, sólo el viento y el calor estaban presentes.

James está hacia ella, son los únicos vivos, los habitantes no huyeron, murieron, al mismo tiempo, todas las vidas se fueron volando. Examinan Laredo en busca de cualquier señal de vida, ninguna. Están esperando ayuda. Estados Unidos se dará cuenta de que Laredo tiene un problema. Seguramente a diez kilómetros de distancia, la gente vive, ama y respira.

Laredo empieza a oler a muerte, los cuerpos se descomponen, los insectos empiezan a correr por todas partes. Irse es la única solución. Texas no podría morir, Dallas, Houston son ciudades inmortales.
