About the Book

Un livre à deux destins croisés, deux personnes très différentes, tout les séparent. Pourtant, ils vont se croiser, s'aimer et se détester. La vie n'est jamais une autoroute toute droite.

Le début de l'histoire commence à Laredo, une ville du Texas. Si on traverse la rue on est au Mexique. Le choix de la ville n'est pas anodin, l'étranger, ou le futur migrant est ton voisin. A quelques pas, le Mexique a implanté une nouvelle ville, la nouvelle Laredo. Le migrant n'a pas marché pendant des milliers de kilomètres, il habitait la rue d'en face.

Alejandro est un fils de migrants, ses parents sont mexicains et lui aussi, ils habitaient à une cinquantaine de kilomètres de Laredo. Il est surprenant de mentionner des migrants aux Etats-Unis, à part les amérindiens, tous les habitants sont des migrants ou des descendants de migrants. Le terme met en évidence le mépris. On parle d'italo-américains, mais jamais d'irlandais-américains. Les mots qu'on emploie, le choix des termes a une signification.

Laredo, les USA, c'est le pays de la suffisance, tu n'y meurs de faim si tu travailles, tes enfants à l'école, l'American way life leur permettra de devenir riche, et profiter de tous les plaisirs de la vie.

Priscilla est une fille américaine, elle descend de migrant anglais, débarqués ici, voilà plusieurs siècles. Blonde, les yeux verts, aucun doute possible sur ses origines. Ses parents font parti de la middle class, ils observent le Mexique avec empathie. Mais les fils de migrants du Sud, les exaspèrent. Ils ne veulent pas s'intégrer à la société américaine. 'Ils vivent en clan, comme le feraient les animaux.

Un jour, elle mange une glace sur une route qui mène nulle part, surement en Californie, Alejandro s'assoie vers elle, il la harcelle pour obtenir un baiser. Il décrète que c'est sa copine. Elle ne répond pas, elle est timide, et n'ose pas s'imposer. Quelques jours plus tard, il la présente à ses parents, ils l'invitent à manger dimanche prochain. Elle n'ose par dire non.
Un matin, James apparait, Priscilla l'aime, il est boutonneux, elle le trouve si beau. Alejandro devient fou. Il entre en crise. James lui a volé sa copine, elle lui appartient.

Alejandro après une grosse bêtise est condamné à dix ans de prison, au grand soulagement des deux amoureux.

Il sort de prison.

Quelques jours plus tard, Priscilla se rend compte qu'à Laredo, la vie s'est arrêtée. Plus personne ne vit, même pas un chien, ni un oiseau, juste le vent et la chaleur étaient présents.

James est vers elle, ils sont les seuls vivants, les habitants n'ont pas fui, ils sont morts, au même moment, toutes les vies se sont envolés. Ils arpent Laredo à la recherche d'un signe de vie, aucun. Ils attendent du secours. L'Amérique va se rendre compte que Laredo rencontre un problème. Surement à dix kilomètres, les gens vivent, s'aiment et respirent.
Laredo commence à sentir la mort, les corps se décomposent, des insectes commencent à courir partout. Partir, est la seule solution. Le Texas n'a pas pu mourir, Dallas, Houston sont des villes immortelles.
