Ivan Sergueïevitch Tourgueniev est un écrivain, romancier, nouvelliste et dramaturge russe né le 9 novembre (28 octobre) 1818 à Orel et mort le 3 septembre (22 août) 1883 à Bougival. Son nom était autrefois orthographié Tourguénieff ou Tourguéneff. Sa famille est aisée, et sa mère très autoritaire. Il vit de 1838 à 1841 à Berlin avant de retourner à Saint-Pétersbourg puis de partir pour Londres et de s'installer à Paris. Fiodor Dostoïevski, qui le cite en épigraphe à sa nouvelle Les Nuits blanches, le caricature sous le nom de Karmazinov dans Les Démons. Son roman le plus célèbre est Pères et Fils, qui met notamment en scène des nihilistes -dénomination qu'il popularise - et auxquels il oppose le héros positif . Il se lia d'amitié avec de nombreux écrivains, comme Gustave Flaubert, Émile Zola, Victor Hugo, Guy de Maupassant, Alphonse Daudet, George Sand, Edmond de Goncourt, Prosper Mérimée, Alexandre Dumas ou Jules Verne, ainsi qu'avec des musiciens et compositeurs. Biographie Ivan Tourgueniev naît à Orel (à 350 km au sud de Moscou) en 1818, de Serge Nicolaïévitch (1793-1834) et Varvara Petrovna Loutovinova (1787-1850), ainsi qu'il apparaît par son acte de décès. Son père, officier supérieur, est issu d'une grande famille aristocratique d'origine tatare, établie à Tula; sa mère, d'une famille de noblesse de service d'Orel, d'origine lituanienne, orpheline à 16 ans, est une riche propriétaire terrienne, "règnant" sur 5000 âmes. Tout oppose le père de l'écrivain, bel officier, élégant et racé, voire efféminé, effacé en famille, de sa mère, plus âgée, brutale pomiéchtchika, tyrannique jusque dans sa propre famille, aux traits grossiers: c'est un mariage d'intérêt pour le descendant des khans de la Horde. Terres vierges est un roman majeur d'Ivan Tourgueniev paru en 1877 qui retrace une histoire de jeunes gens allant au peuple, dans le sillage de mouvements populistes, comme ceux des narodniki. Traduit par Emile Durand-Gréville en 1877 Résumé Appartement de Niédjanov L'histoire se passe d'abord en 1868 à Saint-Pétersbourg, dans le pauvre appartement d'Alexis Dmitriévitch Niédjanov. Thècle Machourine, sage-femme pauvre et chaste, s'y trouve, puis arrive Pimène Ostrodoumov, visiblement tout aussi pauvre. Ils parlent tous deux d'un courrier de Moscou qui est arrivé il faut liquider un traître, nous sommes chez des révolutionnaires. Puis arrive Pakline, sorte de nain boiteux. On sent qu'il essaie d'entrer dans les bonnes grâces des deux, sans aucun succès (on dirait un informateur de la police). Enfin arrive Niédjanov, 23 ans, fils naturel d'un grand personnage qui depuis sa mort lui fait verser une rente chaque mois, son demi-frère est un prince. Un cinquième personnage surgit qui dénote tout de suite par son élégance et sa prestance, un statut élevé. C'est en effet un haut fonctionnaire, Sipiaguine, âgé de 48 ans. Il était assis à côté de Niédjanov au théâtre, et ils ont discuté. Malgré la différence de classe sociale, il a trouvé le jeune homme intéressant; il se pique de libéralisme. Ayant vu dans la gazette de la police que Niédjanov cherchait une place de précepteur, il est venu lui proposer de passer quelques semaines chez lui à la campagne pour s'occuper de son fils de neuf ans.
