Or, s'il y a une connaissance déjà faite, c'est évidemment celle-là. Aucune expérience aérostatique n'a eu un retentissement pareil aux deux ascensions de M. Nadar, qui, chose remarquable, avait pour but d'obtenir, au moyen d'un ballon, les sommes nécessaires à la construction d'une machine d'une tout autre espèce, destinée non plus à flotter, mais bien à voyager dans l'atmosphère. Convaincu par l'expérience comme par le raisonnement qu'il est impossible de diriger au travers de l'air un immense volume de même légèreté spécifique que cet élément mobile, M. Nadar s'arrêta à l'idée que, pour se mouvoir dans ce milieu, un corps devait être bien plus lourd que l'air, de manière à n'offrir, par son volume, que peu de résistance au déplacement et peu de prise au vent contraire. C'est éminemment le cas de l'oiseau. Mais la difficulté consiste alors à trouver un moteur, une machine qui, prenant son point d'appui dans l'air, ait assez de force d'une part pour soutenir l'aéronaute contre la pesanteur, de l'autre pour le faire avancer et marcher. La nature nous offre dans le vol des oiseaux ce double effet obtenu d'une manière admirable. Les oiseaux lourds, tels que le Condor, l'Aigle, le Cygne, le Dindon aborigène, pourvus d'ailes d'une dimension moyenne, sont d'excellents voyageurs aériens, tant pour la hauteur qu'ils atteignent que pour les immenses trajets qu'ils franchissent. Sans parler de la Grue, la Caille aux courtes ailes émigre chaque automne au travers des mers. M. Nadar établit que c'est maintenant une idée tombée dans le domaine public, savoir qu'avec un mécanisme connu, l'hélice, et un moteur suffisamment énergique, la vapeur, il est possible à l'homme de s'élever, de se soutenir et de progresser, et même, jusqu'à un certain point, de s'avancer en sens contraire d'un courant d'air, c'est-à-dire d'un vent modéré. D'autres mécanismes et d'autres forces motrices ont été indiqués et tout aussi peu expérimentés que l'hélice avec la vapeur d'eau. Félix Tournachon, dit Nadar, est un caricaturiste, écrivain, aéronaute et photographe français, né le 5 ou le 6 avril 1820 à Paris et mort le 20 mars 1910 dans la même ville. Il publie à partir de 1854 une série de portraits photographiques d'artistes contemporains, parmi lesquels Daniel-François-Esprit Auber, Michel Bakounine, Théodore de Banville, Charles Baudelaire, Hector Berlioz, Sarah Bernhardt, Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot, Gustave Courbet, Gustave Doré, Jules Favre, Loïe Fuller, Victor Hugo, Zadoc Kahn, Charles Le Roux, Franz Liszt, Édouard Manet, Guy de Maupassant, Gérard de Nerval, Jacques Offenbach, les frères Élie Reclus et Élisée Reclus, Gioachino Rossini, George Sand, Hector de Sastres, Jules Verne, Richard Wagner. Trop souvent réduit à son rôle de photographe, il était aussi un écrivain prolifique dans des genres aussi variés que le roman, la nouvelle, le poème en prose, la brève de comptoir, le témoignage, la plaidoirie ou (sa spécialité) le portrait littéraire. Le pseudonyme Nadar a également été utilisé par une société constituée autour de son frère Adrien Tournachon sous les formes Nadar jeune et Nadar jne, provoquant parfois la confusion. Un arrêt de la Cour impériale de Paris lui a restitué en 1857 la propriété exclusive de ce pseudonyme, sous lequel il signera ses écrits et qui sera utilisé par son atelier photographique sous la gouverne de son fils Paul.
