Inhaltsangabe: Einleitung: Im Haus von Jim und Susan Brown. Es ist 23.15 Uhr an einem Donnerstag in den 70er Jahren. Jim: "Ich denke, ich leg mich jetzt aufs Ohr. Kommst du auch?" Susan: "In ein paar Minuten. Ich muß noch rasch einkaufen!" Jim: "Bestell mir doch noch mal 10 Meter vom flexiblen Kunststoff-Gartenschlauch, den wir letzte Woche gekauft haben, bitte." Susan geht in die Küche und setzt sich vor ihren Home-Computer. Ein kleiner Farbbildschirm ist in der Küche montiert. Susan macht es sich in ihrem Stuhl bequem. Sie deckt die Direct-Shop-Console ab und betätigt einige Knöpfe, um die Verbindung zum Customer Communication Department der City Wide Distribution Center AG herzustellen. Susan beschäftigt sich für einige Minuten mit ihrem Home-Computer, über den sie ihre Bestellungen aufgibt. Bilder vieler Artikel leuchten auf dem Bildschirm auf. Einige laufen in schneller Folge vorbei, andere läßt Susan für ein paar Sekunden stehen, um sie genauer anzuschauen. Zuletzt drückt sie eine besondere Taste. Die Rekapitulation ihrer Bestellungen erscheint auf dem Bildschirm und zeigt die einzelnen Posten mit Artikelbezeichnungen und Preisen sowie das Gesamttotal. Susan kontrolliert die Rekapitulation und drückt dann eine andere Taste, mit welcher sie City-Wide beauftragt, die Order auszuführen und gleichzeitig den Betrag auf ihrem checkfreien Bankkonto zu belasten. Susan lächelt leise mit jener Zufriedenheit vor sich hin, die man spürt, wenn man gerade eine langweilige Aufgabe hinter sich gebracht hat. Aus dem Schlafzimmer hören wir Jim: "Wie war Deine Einkaufsexpedition?" Susan: "Oh, es war furchtbar erschöpfend, ich habe ganze 10 Minuten dafür gebraucht.
