La educación contemporánea considera al constructivismo como la postura dominante en la que se basa la conceptualización de los procesos de enseñanza y de aprendizaje. Tres vertientes que nutren nuestro trabajo; la perspectiva sociocultural de Lev Vygotsky, el aprendizaje significativo de David Ausubel y el enfoque la Enseñanza para la Comprensión apoyado en la teoría de las inteligencias múltiples de Howard Gardner. Nuestra propuesta integra los aprendizajes constructivistas y la enseñanza en línea. Formula un modelo teórico denominado "Modelo Constructivista para la Enseñanza de las Ciencias en Línea" (MoCEL).

Para comenzar el diseño y desarrollo de una aplicación concreta en el marco de MoCEL, es imprescindible llevar a cabo la etapa de investigación diagnóstica, con el fin de caracterizar la dimensión contextual propuesta para nuestro modelo a través de tres investigaciones. La primera indaga ciertas características del perfil docente, determinado por el marco teórico de la Enseñanza para la Comprensión (EpC) que adopta MoCEL. La segunda recaba información acerca del sistema de apoyo tecnológico que poseen los docentes, como sobre las destrezas de los usuarios respecto a la computadora y sus programas. También son investigadas páginas Web referidas a los Residuos Sólidos Urbanos, como herramientas usadas para el desarrollo de este material.
