Die wissenschaftliche Suche nach strukturellen Korrelaten lokalisierter Hirnfunktionen war bis vor zwanzig Jahren auf das "Naturexperiment" herd- förmiger Hirnerkrankungen angewiesen. Der wesentliche Zugang waren dabei pathoanatomische Studien an Hirnen Verstorbener, die zu Lebzeiten durch umschriebene Verletzungen oder Schlaganfälle neurologische Ausfälle ent- wickelt hatten (Broca, 1863; Wernicke, 187 4; Kleist, 1934; Luria, 1966 ). Störungen wurden also ihren anatomischen Quellen zugeordnet. Die Beziehung zwischen gesunder Hirnanatomie und normaler Funktion hat sich dagegen erst in jüngerer Zeit vor allem durch die Magnetresonanz- Tomographie und Positronenemissions-Tomographie der Untersuchung erschlossen. Wie schon im letzten Jahrhundert hat dabei die Frage der Art der Beziehung zwischen anatomischer und funktioneller Links-Rechts-Asymme- trie des Gehirns ("Hemisphärendominanz") eine besonders aufschlußreiche Rolle gespielt. Anatomische und funktionelle Hemisphärenasymmetrie Ausgangspunkt unserer eigenen Arbeiten zu den hirnstrukturellen Korrelaten hemisphärischer Dominanz waren ursprüngliche Überlegungen von Flechsig (1908), von Economo & Horn (1930) und Geschwind & Levitsky (1968). Sie alle hatten eine funktionelle Bedeutung der makroskopisch gut sichtbaren Links-Rechts-Asymmetrie eines Areals auf der hinteren Supratem- poralfläche, des sogenannten Planum temporale diskutiert, konnten diese Hypothese an ihren Hirnpräparaten wegen fehlender Informationen über die dominante Hemisphäre der Verstorbenen aber natürlich nicht überprüfen (Abb. 1). Bekannt war aus diesen und anderen Arbeiten, daß im unausgewähl- ten Sektionsgut im Mittel 73,5% aller Hirne eine in ihrem Ausmaß variable, linksgerichtete Asymmetrie des Planum temporale zeigen [Übersichten bei Steinmetz (1992), Steinmetzet al.
