About the Book

Uma das atividades que mais e melhor se desenvolveram no Colégio de Ermesinde foi o Teatro, fruto do gosto e da carolice do sr. Pe. Avelino. Com um jeito notável para transformar alunos de aproveitamento por vezes crítico em atores espantosos, levou à cena obras de teatro notáveis, como o Auto da Barca do Inferno, Morte e Vida Severina de João Cabral de Melo Neto com música de Chico Buarque, obras de Maria Clara Machado e outras. Foi por o teatro ter tal êxito no Colégio de Ermesinde que, em 1981, aproveitei as férias grandes para escrever Tarde, Noite e Alvorada - celebração da Infância, obra em que, um pouco autobiograficamente, punha em cena dois rapazitos e uma rapariga, três irmãos que, com um rio como centro do espaço de brincadeiras, punham em polvorosa a velha moleira, a ti Laja, criava atmosferas poéticas, sonhos, pesadelos, enfim, um pouco da vida de crianças num espaço isolado do mundo. Entreguei o texto ao Pe. Avelino. Ele leu o texto, escrito conforme a pronúncia popular, pensou no assunto, escolheu a equipa que seria o elenco de atores, ensaiou e, no fim do ano letivo de 82, levou à cena a peça que eu tinha escrito. O Pe. Avelino adaptou algumas passagens e tão bem o fez que aquilo foi mesmo um sucesso.(...)E ficou toda a gente à espera de que o autor de Tarde, Noite e Alvorada criasse mais teatro para o Colégio de Ermesinde. O Sr. Pe. Pinho, que era quem tinha funções mais elevadas na hierarquia do Colégio, louvou a colaboração esplêndida de que resultara o interessante espetáculo. Pois é, mas o certo é que, por isto ou por aquilo, não houve mais teatro que eu tivesse escrito. Adaptei A Fada Oriana de Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen que também foi levado à cena com um êxito extraordinário, assim como adaptei, mas no Externato Camões, História duma Gaivota e do Gato que a ensinou a voar, que foi levado à cena com sucesso, porém, numa das piores épocas por que passou o Externato em termos de apoio ou falta dele. Escrevi, já bastante mais tarde, uma peça de teatro em que cumpria a promessa de desenvolver o poema de Manuel Bandeira, Virgem Maria, de tão gratas recordações para mim. Entreguei igualmente o texto ao Pe. Avelino, disse-me que leu o texto mas não conseguiu encontrar na cabeça dele nada que lhe parecesse que pudesse bater certo em cena. E, realmente, A Vozinha da Virgem Maria está agora como estava quando acabei de a escrever. O teatro, no Colégio de Ermesinde, identificava-se com o sr. Pe. Avelino, não se fez nada de teatro que não fosse obra do Pe. Avelino. Mas a idade vai pesando e o excesso de trabalho também. A encenação de Tarde, Noite e Alvorada foi um dos momentos mais altos da minha carreira de professor no Colégio de Ermesinde.
