About the Book

12 NEW, USER-PROVEN EXERCISES for CORPORATE MBTI(R) trainings, assessments, consultations and coaching sessions on TEAM-BUILDING and INTERACTION: - DETAILED DESCRIPTION of ALL EXERCISES - EXAMPLES and EXPLANATIONS of HOW the exercises WORK Want to see a short EXAMPLE? 4. Exercise Activity Map An exercise which shows people with different preferences effectively using each others strong sides while working together in one team. It can be used in applications of different kinds of dichotomy, but in this particular case we will focus on the E-I dichotomy. Application: teams of 5-7 people, split into Extraversion (E) and Introversion (I) Time: 7-10 minutes for general preparation + 3-5 minutes for the presentation of each team + 5-7 minutes for the reflection Preparation: Activity cards and the matrix for the Activity map should be prepared beforehand (each team gets one set of Activity cards and one Activity map matrix) Activity cards consist of a set of statements, which the teams will have to rate on the Activity map matrix. Description: The participants are to be divided into 2 groups: Extraverts and Introverts. The sets of Activity cards (one for each team), Activity map matrix, and additional blank sheets for the participants own responses should be distributed to the teams. The teams have to place the Activity card phrases onto the Activity map matrix according to their level of interest in the certain types of activities at school and based on the scale from 0 - not interesting/not my thing to 3 - very interesting/exciting/my thing. Urge the teams to fill the empty sheets. This way you can add to your Activity cards and get an increased number of opinions for using them in future. This way you get a graphic distribution of tasks according to the level of desirability and potential efficiency of different preferences of groups representatives in various types of activities. For the teams with clear preferences, the activities that are more desirable for the Extraverts (the upper part of activity map) will be found in the lower part of the Introvert activity map and vice versa. The teams with less clear preferences will show a less consistent pattern, but it will still be evident. It is crucial for the coach to identify the tendencies and details. Discussion: The interesting part arises when the teams start analyzing Activity maps. Although most of the corporate training participants are long-time acquaintances, the conception of desirable types of activities is often a revelation for them. It shows the reason why in some cases teamwork brings no result, causes difficulties, etc. While analyzing, one needs to consider two aspects: 1.Teams Yin-Yang - effective task distribution and balance within the team, cooperation based on the members strong sides and the task preferability. 2.Personal and professional improvement. Quite often, as a result of this exercise, participants can point out the weak or blind spots that stand in the way of improvement. For instance, without developing excellent skills of oral presentation an introvert holding the position of a marketing director can have difficulties in reaching the desirable goals. At the same time, an extravert holding the same position, but taking little interest in analytical work can also have difficulties with the output. Always try to relate the conclusions you make and the insight you get to real life; ask questions, e.g. can you give an example..?, how can you apply it at work..? Adaptation options: -By using this example one can practice any dichotomy, developing appropriate phrases for the Activity cards -With the help of this exercise one can effectively customize the trainings for the client, choosing the Activity cards phrases based on real types of tasks, completed by the employees of the particular department/organization.
