About the Author: For ten years, across north Texas from Stephenville to Abilene and Dallas, B. J. Mercer worked in almost every part of the radio business. As a DJ, Program Director, Producer, and Sports Director, Mercer worked his way from the bottom to the top in the radio business. At Mix 102.9 Dallas, as a morning show DJ and producer, Mercer produced one of the most highly rated morning shows in the top five radio market in the country. Radio personalities specialize in keeping their audience engaged!
In 2008, Mercer began his new career as a classroom teacher. In that first year, Mercer earned Teacher of the Month and was then awarded Teacher of the Year runner-up. During years two and three, Mercer instructed professional development, his students' projects were selected to the top five projects in Frisco ISD, and his instructional strategies were showcased at TCEA conferences. Mercer's classroom was selected from FISD as a model for the integration of instructional technology. School districts outside of Frisco ISD were invited and observed Mercer's instructional design, instructional strategies, and new technology integration.
Mercer has taught in four different school districts, worked at six different schools and has taught more than fourteen different courses for grades 6 through 12. With only nine years in the classroom, Mercer has been nominated for Teacher of the Year four times and, most recently, at Dripping Springs ISD, Mercer has also been recognized as Teacher of the Term by the DSISD Education Foundation. At this same time, he was presented the Above & Beyond Award from the DSISD School Board as he instructed eight new courses and his students built the school's first radio station.
Like your favorite radio personalities who keep you listening, wanting more, excited to be part of the process, and ready for your chance to win, Mercer keeps his students engaged with creative instructional design, motivating activities, innovative instructional technology, and opportunities for self-discovery. This approach guarantees that each student is tuned in!
At first, Mercer believed radio was his dream vocation. Nine years ago, he realized the profession that he loves most is teaching and he has been teaching like a DJ ever since. The school districts, courses, and demographics have all changed but students are the common denominator. Teaching like a DJ has worked every step of the way!
