Ubicada en los años sesenta, la novela relata las vivencias de una niña en tres casas distintas: la de sus padres, donde vive con sus hermanos, la de Luisa, la abuela del campo, y la de Elbia, la abuela de la ciudad. Lina, la protagonista, asiste con asombro a situaciones que muestran cuán diferentes son las mujeres que gobiernan cada hogar, y relata, con su decir de niña de diez años, una época de importancia histórica para el campo y su familia.

En un entramado de voluntades que la lleva y la trae a pesar de sus deseos, Lina irá aprendiendo lo que luego la formará como adulta. Sus aventuras van de la travesura a la tragedia y del relato de costumbres al de misterio: cuenta sobre las labores del campo, las peleas entre hermanos, la madre siempre al borde de una ataque de nervios, el padre soñador, los rumores que circulan sobre la identidad de una tía, las peleas familiares, las crueldades de sus hermanos, su amor por el dibujo, las quejas de su abuela elegante porque los picaflores prefieran el jardín de la vecina. La historia de Lina atrapa porque, junto con ella, nos preguntamos por qué los adultos actúan como actúan, por qué se equivocan tanto. El encanto de Te quedan lindas las trenzas reside en los personajes reconocibles y los paisajes familiares, que nos acercan a Lina y a la propia infancia.


La novela se encuentra dividida en tres partes. En las dos primeras, Lina narra lo que ocurre cuando visita a los abuelos del campo y luego lo que vive en casa de la abuela Elbia, mientras la segunda voz acota lo que la niña todavía no comprende. En la tercera parte, esa segunda voz se encarga de desarrollar íntegramente un viaje que hace la familia. Esta narración íntima, afectuosa, tal vez la de una Lina adulta que le habla a la niña, o la de la misma autora, es la que mejor comprende a las figuras masculinas, hostiles por momentos, y a las femeninas, a veces frívolas, otras cariñosas; es la que explica qué ocurrirá con los hijos de esa familia en el futuro como consecuencia de esa crianza contradictoria y errática que enseña a dedicar la vida al trabajo pero también a disfrutar del lujo y a sostener las apariencias.

Otro aspecto interesante del libro es la inclusión de ilustraciones, poco común en la literatura para adultos: los dibujos infantiles, además de relacionarse linealmente con el relato, aportan calidez a la historia. La pregunta que parece haber guiado a Severín es qué ocurre con una niña que recibe indicaciones contradictorias acerca del mundo, la familia, el bien y el mal. ¿Puede una persona llevar en sí dos mundos? Las trenzas son el leitmotiv de la historia: la niña insiste en peinarse de esa forma y las abuelas quieren cortárselas, pero en su deseo de retenerlas se va perfilando una voluntad férrea que se opondrá no solo a los deseos de los demás sino al mundo todo. Esa raya al medio que separa su cabello en dos explica lo que ocurre en ella a partir de las dos crianzas: habla del poder que ejerce sobre su cuerpo y sobre su destino. Aunque la vida de Lina tomará un curso inesperado y continuará lejos de su tierra, probablemente nunca se distancie demasiado de aquellos primeros años entre el campo y la ciudad.
