Die Moderne Gesellschaft in Europa tanzte, sofern sie der Anziehungskraft des Tangos erlegen war, einen melancholischen Tango. Diese Ausgangsthese fasst den in Europa getanzten Tango als Ausdruck eines melancholischen Gestimmtseins in Europa auf. Der Tango besaß in Europa in den 10er und 20er Jahren sowie in den 80er und 90er Jahren des 20. Jahrhunderts eine besonders hohe Beliebtheit. Für diese Jahre sind gesellschaftliche Stimmungen zu beobachten, die sich mit der Rezeption des Tangos in Verbindung bringen lassen. Melancholie stellte, so die Annahme der Autorin, das Bindeglied zwischen europäischer Moderner Gesellschaft und dem Tango dar. In den Beschreibungen der Melancholie, des Tangos und der europäischen Modernen Gesellschaft werden sich Ähnlichkeiten zeigen. Es handelt sich um jene Parallelen, die in ihrer Analyse zu Erkenntnissen über die Gesellschaft und deren Gestimmtsein führen. Die vorliegende Arbeit ist der Versuch, diese Parallelen des Tangos und der Modernen Gesellschaft zweier zeitlich begrenzter Epochen der europäischen Tangorezeption zu erfassen und zu beschreiben. Die Melancholie als ein körperlicher, geistiger und seelischer Zustand sei Leitfaden der Arbeit, Auswahlkriterium für behandelte Themenkomplexe, Kritik der Moderne und zugleich Teil einer Antwort für die Suche nach einem möglichen Umgang mit ihr. Die Melancholie, in ihrer Eigenschaft des Wahrnehmens der Welt in einer anderen Weise als die alltägliche, wird den Blick auf das Gestimmtsein der beiden Lebenswelten Tango und Moderne Gesellschaft öffnen. Es werden die melancholischen Elemente beider Lebenswelten dargestellt, und in ihnen jene Momente gesucht, in denen sich Elemente beider Lebenswelten kreuzten. Die Kreuzungspunkte werden Aspekten des Melancholischen zugeordnet werden können. Sie werden zu einem Teil faktisch belegt, zum anderen Teil auf metaphorischer Ebene veranschaulicht.
