Je n'ai conspire dans ma vie qu'aux epoques ou j'avais la majorite de la France pour complice et ou je cherchais avec elle le salut de la patrie. C'est en ce trait que Talleyrand resume l'etat d'esprit d'ou proviennent les hauts paradoxes de son action et la prodigieuse longevite de sa presence au pouvoir. Ne a Paris en 1754 dans l'une des plus anciennes familles de la noblesse francaise, Talleyrand meurt en 1838 a 84 ans. Il est le seul homme a avoir occupe des fonctions majeures et toujours plus prestigieuses au sein de tous les gouvernements qui, de la Couronne de France a la Monarchie de Juillet en passant par la Constituante et l'Empire, se sont confusement succede. Lui seul sut dominer les evenements de cette periode si bouleversee de l'Histoire. Ses ennemis n'y virent qu'un traitre accelerant les destitutions afin d'en faire son miel: qu'il ait ete aussi ambitieux que ceux qui lui firent le reproche de les frustrer de leurs ambitions ne saurait guere suffire a eclairer une si exceptionnelle destinee. Je n'ai jamais donne un conseil pervers a un gouvernement ou a un prince, mais je ne m'ecroule pas avec eux , confiait le prince de Talleyrand, bien decide a ne pas se meler de choses qu'il desapprouverait , car un gouvernement qu'on soutient est un gouvernement qui tombe... . Que ce soit vis-a-vis du Directoire et en faveur de Bonaparte, ou vis-a-vis de Napoleon et en faveur de Louis XVIII, Talleyrand n'a jamais abandonne quiconque qui ne se fut d'abord abandonne lui-meme. Lorsque tout s'effondre en un flot de catastrophes suscitees par les ideologies, alors, en prince d'Ancien Regime et en magnifique lecteur de Saint-Simon, Talleyrand se fait une regle de demeurer altier et froid afin que dans l'emotion se decouvre un point de stabilite qui fasse souvenir de la France. Pour tenir contre l'ideologie cette position universelle, Talleyrand dresse un mur autour de sa vie interieure, qu'il cultive en silence, car la vie interieure seule peut remplacer toutes les chimeres . Et de son pas boiteux, cet homme afflige d'un pied-bot marche droit son chemin dans un monde branlant. Enigmatique et franc, son sens prophetique edifia les traites internationaux qui donneront a l'Europe du XXe siecle le socle de sa possible pacification et de sa defense collective contre les totalitarismes. On le jugea sur les apparences: l'eveque apostat, l'aristocrate opportuniste, le politique deprave...

Il y a bien plus a comprendre en cette figure qu'ont admiree Lamartine, Balzac et Goethe. Et il y a tant a apprendre de cet homme qui, concentrant comme Tocqueville la realite d'un millenaire de Royaute, parvint a lire le sens de son temps et a trouver les remedes qu'exigeait l'eruption de chaque nouvelle maladie. Sur Talleyrand l'on a beaucoup ecrit. Mais la biographie de reference, la plus vivante, la plus complete, que sa beaute eleve au rang d'oeuvre, reste celle de Lacour-Gayet. Elle peint avec genie la vie de l'un des plus brillants hommes politiques que le monde ait connu, qui fut aussi l'un des grands memorialistes de la litterature. Le livre etait epuise, et les exemplaires qu'on en glanait etaient souvent prives de leurs references. Voici, entiere et sans lacunes, l'edition definitive de cette oeuvre classique.
