O Natal é um dos eventos mais celebradas em todo o mundo. A par do Ano Novo e dos dias nacionais de cada respetivo país (e.g., Dia da Independência dos EUA ou Dia da Bastilha em França), o dia 25 de Dezembro é um dos que mais contribui para a articulação do quotidiano, do trabalho e da economia, inclusivamente em nações não cristãs. Desde a Antiguidade que o Solstício de Inverno tem sido propício ao jovial convívio comunitário.
Sobretudo desde o século XX em diante, os dias em torno desta festividade têm sido uma ocasião de fomento da atividade comercial. O período invernal representa o mais sólido estímulo à economia - superando qualquer espécie de pacote fiscal -, uma vez que os rendimentos e as despesas, tanto de famílias como de empresas, experimentam um incremento generalizado. Nos Estados Unidos, por exemplo, as vendas de Natal geram, aproximadamente, 3 biliões de dólares.
Um dos vultos mais emblemáticos da época natalícia é São Nicolau, apesar do desconhecimento generalizado do público a seu respeito. Hoje, São Nicolau encontra-se reduzido a uma figura idosa, fantástica e generosamente gorducha, sendo amiúde acompanhado de uma série de renas voadoras e empregando na sua oficina duendes sempre afáveis. Compreensivelmente, muitos referem Nicolau como a fonte de inspiração dos inúmeros mitos propagados acerca do Pai Natal. Embora isto seja parcialmente verdadeiro, convém referir que as semelhanças entre São Nicolau e o Pai Natal são, na realidade, bastante limitadas.
Embora o Pai Natal tivesse muitas influências, a mais famosa é a de São Nicolau, um filantropo ferozmente religioso que dedicou a sua vida a ajudar os mais desfavorecidos. Ele não era apenas um bispo estimado, era também um fervoroso defensor da fé que permaneceu destemido quando confrontado com a perseguição. Marcá-lo como um indivíduo piedoso e temente a Deus seria um eufemismo enorme - na verdade, ele era, para aqueles que o rodeavam, a definição de uma divindade ambulante e um milagreiro inigualável enviado diretamente do Céu.
Após a morte de Nicolau de Mira, o 6 de Dezembro tornou-se o dia da sua comemoração e, ao longo dos séculos, as crianças anteciparam a sua vinda com presentes. No entanto, outras crianças, particularmente as de natureza mais travessa, tremiam sob as cobertas no dia 6 de Dezembro, porque não podiam ansiar pelo tinir dos sinos do trenó ou pelas risadas contagiantes. Em vez disso, elas temiam os sons desconcertantes da respiração pesada, dos grunhidos guturais e do chocalhar das correntes pesadas que acompanhavam o terrífico Krampus.
Apesar dos melhores esforços da Igreja Católica e de outros grupos conservadores, o Krampus está no centro de um importante renascimento, imiscuindo-se não só na literatura moderna, mas surgindo, inclusivamente, como um elemento permanente da cultura pop.
