Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2015 im Fachbereich Archäologie, Note: Sehr gut, Universität Wien (Klassische Archäologie), Veranstaltung: Kulturgeschichte des Christentums - Frühchristliche Grabkunst, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Die vorliegende Arbeit untersucht die Ikonografie alttestamentarischer Szenen in den frühchristlichen Katakomben Roms. Die Jenseitsvorstellungen der frühen Christen wurden durch Anknüpfung an pagane Darstellungen des Elysiums, durch sakral interpretierte Oranten, Mahldarstellungen und bukolische Szenen sowie durch die Verwendung bestimmter Themen aus dem Alten und Neuen Testament am Grab zum Ausdruck gebracht. Dass die Christen des dritten Jahrhunderts bei der von ihnen in Auftrag gegebenen Grabkunst frequent auf pagane Motive zurückgriffen, zeigt, dass es eine spezifisch christliche Ikonografie zu jener Zeit noch nicht gab und man sowohl in Stil und Form den zeitgenössischen Tendenzen folgte. Im Laufe der Zeit entstand eine eigenständige Bildsprache, die weniger theologische Reflexion als die Sehnsucht nach Überwindung des Todes und Hoffnung auf die Auferstehung widerspiegelt. Bereits der Denkmälerbestand des 3. Jahrhunderts macht deutlich, dass sich die frühen Christen in den Katakomben bevorzugt für verkürzte Errettungsszenen aus dem Alten Testament entschieden. Die Wandlung von Endymion zu Jona oder vom bukolischen Schafträger zum Guten Hirten belegt den freien Umgang der Maler mit traditionellem Bildgut zur Erschließung der christlichen Bildthemen. Ein Beweis für die inhaltliche Weiterentwicklung einzelner Motive ist speziell mit der Errettung Daniels aus der Löwengrube gegeben, da männliche Oranten bei paganen Darstellungen nicht vorkommen. Themen des Neuen Testamentes sind in geringerer Zahl in den Katakomben vertreten und beschäftigen sich weniger mit dem Jenseits oder dem Schicksal der Seele, sondern mit Heilung und Speisung.
