Wird nun der Blick auf den Religionsunterricht gelenkt, gelten diese Überlegungen in einem besonderen Kontext. Mit in der Regel zwei Wochenstunden kann diese Zeit in der Schule für die Schüler zu einer Oase der Kraft und Ruhe, der Entlastung von Leistungsdruck und einem geschützten Raum werden, in dem sie nicht nur als Lernende betrachtet werden, sondern in ihrer ganzheitlichen Subjekt-Werdung unterstützt und ermutigt werden. Die religiöse Prägungsgeschichte und der allgemeine und religiöse Entwicklungsstand der Einzelnen sind in diesem Zusammenhang entscheidend für die unterrichtliche Praxis. Aber darüber hinaus kann der Religionsunterricht zum konstruktiven Diskurs anregen und Haltungen prägen. Es spielen persönliche Gedanken und Gefühle eine Rolle, aber auch gesellschaftliche Einflussfaktoren wie zum Beispiel Medien, die eine nicht zu verachtende Position im Leben Heranwachsender einnehmen. Eine gewisse Sensibilität des Religionslehrers ist dabei entscheidend. Christliche Werte und Überzeugungen, mögen sie noch so wertvoll sein, lassen sich nicht plump auswendig lernen wie die Mitternachtsformel im Kontext der Mathematik. Vielmehr gilt es, sein Gegenüber genau wahrzunehmen, mit all seinen Rahmenfaktoren, seiner bisherigen religiösen Sozialisation und seinen daraus resultierenden Haltungen, diesen zunächst wertschätzend zu begegnen und eine Lernatmosphäre zu schaffen, in der ein Schüler sich öffnet, um andere Perspektiven einzunehmen.
