Häufig heißt es, dass nicht die Anwendung bestimmter Techniken angestrebt werde, sondern das Verinnerlichen einer systemischen Haltung. Seit einigen Jahren wird der systemische Ansatz immer populärer. Begründet in den 50er Jahren fand er zunächst nur in der Familientherapie Anerkennung. In den vergangenen Jahrzehnten hielt die systemische Sichtweise dann nicht nur in Psychotherapie, Erziehungsberatung und pädagogischen Bereichen wie Kindertherapie, sozialer Arbeit und der Schule, sondern vor allem auch im unternehmerischen Bereich als Personal-, Team- und Führungskräfteberatung, Einzug. Auffällig ist: "Systemisch" scheint im Trend zu liegen. Möglicherweise hängt dies mit der Eigenschaft der systemischen Sichtweise zusammen, die Ursache für Probleme nicht in den Personen, sondern in den Beziehungsmustern zwischen Personen zu suchen. Die Beziehungsfähigkeit rückt auch in der Schule immer mehr ins Zentrum der Aufmerksamkeit. John Hattie untersuchte in seiner großangelegten Meta-Studie die Auswirkungen verschiedener Einflussfaktoren auf die Schülerleistung. Die Ergebnisse sorgten dadurch für Aufsehen, weil der Hattie-Studie nach Maßnahmen, die als besonders lernförderlich angesehen wurden (kleinere Klassen, Individualisierung des Lernprozesses und Verständnis des Lehrers als Lernbegleiter) viel weniger positiven Einfluss auf die Schülerleistung haben als angenommen.
