Dieses Interesse ergibt sich aus ihrer faszinierenden Strukturchemie, interessanter katalytischer Eigenschaften und einem hohen Potential für industrielle Anwendungen z. B. für die Abscheidung von Metalloxidschichten. Alkoxide und deren Derivate gehören zu den attraktivsten Vorstufen zur Herstellung von Oxidmaterialien. Ihre Attraktivität liegt zuallererst in der Tatsache, dass sie leicht zugänglich sind und aus kostengünstigen Verbindungen synthetisiert werden können. Darüber hinaus sind Alkoxidliganden über Wärmebehandlungen leicht entfernbar. Die Metallalkoholate M(OR)x, (M = ein Metall der Wertigkeit x; R = Alkyl oder Aryl-Gruppe) sind ausgezeichnete Vorstufen für die Abscheidung von Metalloxiden. Ihre Anwendung in der Optoelektronik, als Supraleiter und Keramiken führte zu einer Renaissance des Interesses an der Chemie dieser Verbindungen. Professor Mehrotra und seine Gruppe haben vor Jahrzehnten äußerst wichtige Fortschritte in der Synthese von Hetermetalloalkoxiden gemacht, das heißt Verbindungen, die zwei, drei oder vier verschiedene Metalle in einem Cluster-Molekül beinhalten. Im Jahr 1978 veröffentlichte Professor Bradley von der Universität London sein Buch mit dem Titel "Metal Alkoxides", auf das hier als Grundreferenzquelle verwiesen wird. Bereits 1958 stellte Bradley für homometallische Alkoxide die generelle Tendenz zur Ausbildung höherer bevorzugter Koordinationszahlen fest. Hierbei wird zumeist der geringstmögliche Polymerisationsgrad über (μ- und μ3) Alkoxo-Brücken zwischen ähnlichen Metallen ausgebildet.
