Die Studien beruhen auf persönlichen Gesprächen mit Führungskräften unterschiedlichster Branchen und Regionen. Sie gelten mittlerweile als Gradmesser aktueller wirtschaftlicher Tendenzen. Hauptaspekt der Studien ist die Frage nach den wichtigsten Herausforderungen der kommenden Jahre und wie Führungskräfte diesen auf Unternehmensseite begegnen wollen. Betrachtet man alle Studien der letzten Jahre, so wird deutlich, dass die größte Herausforderung die adäquate Reaktion auf sich schnell ändernde Märkte, Technologien, Gesellschaften und Unternehmen ist. Die Fähigkeit sich diesen Veränderungen schnell anpassen zu können und die sich dadurch bietenden Chancen zu erkennen und zu nutzen wird zukünftig immer stärker über Erfolg und Misserfolg entscheiden. Zwei Faktoren sind hier besonders ausschlaggebend: Die Möglichkeiten die sich durch die digitale Ökonomie in den letzten Jahren ergeben haben und noch ergeben werden. Und die Fähigkeit diese Möglichkeiten durch Geschäftsmodellinnovation gewinnbringend zu nutzen. Ich zeige in dieser Arbeit, dass stetes Wachstum, gerade in etablierten Unternehmen, zunehmend nicht mehr allein durch kontinuierliche Produktentwicklung und -innovation erzielt werden kann. Vielmehr sind es radikal neue Geschäftsmodelle, die durch disruptive Innovationen zu neuem Wachstum führen. Gerade die digitale Ökonomie bietet den idealen Kontext und die Voraussetzungen, um diese neuartige Geschäftsmodelle etablieren zu können.
