About the Book

Finally, a book changes the image of the old women in children's books. Meet the Sweeet Old Lady. This charming lady takes "sw-ee-t" to "sw-eee-t." She is an enchanting, charismatic, colorful, fun-loving old woman who gently teaches the values of kindness, compassion and empathy. She is also an example of a strong, independent woman who embraces and celebrates love and life. As you get to know her, you might want to be just like her. You might begin to ask yourself, "What would the Sweeet Old Lady do?" Includes a Sing-A-Long Song. The song can be heard and viewed on youtube, The Sweeet Old Lady channel. This book contains life-saving tips for pets and promotes humane education and responsible pet ownership. All of the author's net proceeds from the sale of this book are donated to her 501(c)3 nonprofit cat rescue and sanctuary.
About the Author: Catherine D. Killam, also known as "Cat" Catherine and her husband live on the Big Island of Hawaii. She and her husband formed Cat-Care, a 501(c)3 nonprofit in 1998. They have rescued well over 500 animals either through reuniting them with their owners or providing them temporary or permanent shelter in a no-kill cat sanctuary. The residents of "The Cat House" are spayed or neutered. With the birth of twin granddaughters, Catherine was inspired to write a children's book. While reading to her granddaughters she noticed a lack of positive role models for older women. The only books about older women had them swallowing something like flies, snow, etc., or being cruel to children. She also noticed that nursery rhymes were not very bedtime friendly. After singing, "This old man ..." one too many times, she wanted to sing a song about a sweet old lady, but not just any old sweet lady. She wanted to redefine sweet, so she changed sweet to sweeet. Thus the Sweeet Old Lady was born. It started with a song and ended with this book, which is only the beginning. Part of the book is a blending of fact and fiction. The Killams do live in an enchanted forest. They are surrounded by tall trees and they do live in a red and white gingerbread house. They feed lots of dogs, too. They also have a separate house just for cats, "The Cat House." The Sweeet Old Lady is the woman Catherine wishes to become. Many times throughout the day, she'll ask herself if she is being the Sweeet Old Lady or not. She also asks herself, "What would the Sweeet Old Lady do?" Maybe you might begin asking yourself that same question too. In addition to wanting a book to depict an elderly woman in a positive light, Catherine also wanted to increase awareness on ways to further help animals. She feels that it is important to educate children about responsible pet ownership. She has taught over 80 humane education classes at schools, libraries, civic clubs, etc. In her experience in rescuing animals over the last 14 years, she knows that owner identification is the single most important thing a pet owner can do to assist their pets in being reunited. She wants to take every opportunity to bring awareness to several pet issues and her children's books are a way to spread the word. A section on life saving tips for pets will be included in all her children's books. For more information go to www.enchantedforestpublishing.com or visit the The Sweeet Old Lady Page on Facebook.
