About the Book

The Chmielnicki Uprising by the Cossack rebels in Ruthenia which turned into a Ukrainian war of liberation from Poland lasting four years was over. Just when the Polish people thought the war was over and safe to restart their lives when suddenly, they are attacked by Sweden through Pomerania and northern Lithuania. The Swedish invasion of Poland, 1655-1667, known as "The Deluge" war is just beginning. It will leave the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in ruins. Like locusts on a field of wheat, the Swedes with their allies of the Brandenburgs and Czechs came to Poland to reave, rape, and plunder everything that they could. They killed without mercy or conscience. They took all of the livestock, crops, and storehouses of grain. They stole the tools from every trade and absconded with every artifact, paintings, furniture, china, Chinese porcelain, glassware, utensils, and carpets from Persia. They took whole kitchens and entire interiors from the great mansions and palaces. They went to the state, city, and town halls of records taking all of the archived documents, marriage and birth documents, titles of property and estates, records of every kind. They even emptied the church archives. In many of the smaller villages and hamlets, such records of birth, marriage, and property were filed with the church. The Swedes took it all back to Stockholm. They stripped the churches of all their gold and silver ornamentation, altar chalices, and accessories. Being Protestants they destroyed the statues of Jesus, Mary, and the saints. They refused to acknowledge such effigies as sacred. Worst of all, they took their horses; the one thing that the Poles prided more than anything. What they couldn't take they destroyed with fire and cannon. The loss of life was incredible, but the nobles brought this upon themselves when they cowered and surrendered without a fight; giving up their honor, their rights, and their lives. The Swedes promised everything in persuading the occupants of cities and fortresses to surrender without a fight, only to ignore these promises once they took possession. The king allowed murder and rape, and the execution of soldiers along with the destruction of public and personal property. The written and oral word of even King Charles X was not to be trusted. When all seemed lost for the country, the little fortress of Jansa Gora defied the Swedish invaders and their German and Czech mercenaries. This marked the first outright expression of defiance. The fighting and resistance of Czestochowa resonated throughout the land as a rallying call to every loyal Pole. The religious significance of this, the holiest of holy shrines in Poland, touched the hearts of every man, woman, and child. They saw it as a sign from the Blessed Virgin to get up and fight; to come to the aide of their motherland. The unsuccessful siege proved that the Swedes were not invincible. Faith, honor, and blood saved the country from the worst invasion ever, so far. The Andruszkiewicz family was involved throughout this entire conflict. Unfortunately, a discovery of treason was found among the Lithuanian families. The treason is met and dealt with at the Battle of Tykocin Castle. When all is said and done the families all return to Poland and try to rebuild their estates.
