About the Book

This book is presented as non-fiction and serves as a guide to research options for treatment of prostate cancer and other localized cancers, including pediatric cancers. It also serves as a guide for those who travel to South Korea for treatment. Finally, it serves as a guide for understanding the many challenges facing cancer patients and their families. In order to present a composite story based on the experiences of several real patients who have been treated for prostate and other localized cancers, the storyline uses both fictional and real characters. This is the account of a man who discovers he has prostate cancer, investigates his choices for treatment, chooses proton beam therapy (PBT), and goes to Seoul, South Korea to be treated at the National Cancer Center. Side stories deal with men who did not actively seek treatment in time, along with the happy story of proton beam therapy being used to treat pediatric cancer.
About the Author: York L. Phillips was born in Colorado and has lived in many places in the United States and overseas. He attended the University of Illinois and Virginia Tech. Phillips retired in 2011 from a career as an urban planner, writing ordinances, zoning reports, and similar technical documents for over forty years. Having an interest in writing, Phillips decided to work with Curtis Poling on a book about prostate cancer and proton beam therapy. Other writing projects on the shelf include a play, a novel, and a non-fiction book about the development of a new proton beam center. Phillips is married to Vicki Phillips and resides in coastal Georgia, USA. Curtis Poling was born in Ohio and has lived in many places in the United States pursuing a career in the building products and home improvement products industries. In 2007, at age 53, Poling was diagnosed with prostate cancer. A thorough person by nature, Poling investigated his options through research on the Internet and discussions with a variety of medical professionals, with particular attention to the adverse effects of the various treatments. Poling discovered proton beam therapy and pursued this option at Loma Linda University Medical Center in California. After overcoming his cancer, Poling began blogging to make others aware of the availability and benefits of proton beam therapy. Poling now serves in the US with KMI International, helping patients from around the world obtain treatment at the National Cancer Center in Seoul, Korea. Poling is married to Tracy Poling and resides in coastal Georgia, USA.
