Ständig kürzere Innovationszyklen, gestiegene Komplexität der Produkte und erhöhter Wettbewerbsdruck machen Outsourcing zu einem der Schlagworte der vergangen Dekaden. Die Fertigungstiefe sinkt zunehmend, und damit einhergehend steigt die Bedeutung der benötigten Fremdleistung in der Unternehmung. In der Automobilindustrie beispielsweise liegt der Anteil der Fremdleistung im Durchschnitt zwischen 65 % und 75 %, wobei dieser bei manchen Herstellern, wie zum Beispiel Smart sogar zwischen 88 % und 90 % liegt. Mit der Beschaffung dieser Bauteile werden in nicht unerheblichem Maße die Weichen für Erfolg oder Misserfolg des einzelnen Produktes bzw. des gesamten Unternehmens gestellt. Ist das Vorprodukt qualitativ minderwertig, so mindert dies in direkter Form die Qualität des Endproduktes. Preisschwankungen der Vorprodukte wirken sich in besonderem Maße bei einem derartig hohen finanziellen Anteil der Fremdleistung mit entsprechender Hebelwirkung auf den Unternehmensgewinn aus. Um der gestiegenen Bedeutung der Beschaffung und damit auch der Auswahl und der Pflege der Lieferanten gerecht zu werden, bedient man sich dem Supplier Relationship Management (SRM). In einem ersten Schritt soll nun eine Einordnung in den Kontext des Wertkettenmanagements vorgenommen werden. Im folgenden dritten Kapitel wird der Ablauf des SRM näher beleuchtet und auf einzelne Bestandteile eingegangen. Im vierten Kapitel werden dann Möglichkeiten der Lieferantenbewertung und Lieferantenauswahl aufgezeigt, welche eine Klassifizierung einzelner Lieferanten und Strukturierung des gesamten Lieferantenstamms
