The International Sunday Rest Congress at St. Louis was unanimous in desiring that the proceedings of the Congress should be published in book form. Many of the papers read and the addresses delivered were very valuable, and were worthy of preservation for a much larger audience than could possibly have listened to them at the Congress. To carry out the plan by which the more valuable material should be pre served, the editor was Chosen, first, by the Congress itself, and later by the Executive of the International Federation, and he was given full authority to edit and publish.

An examination of the material placed in his hands led him to form the plan of producing an up-to-date book on the Sab bath question, and such a book as would be worthy of the sub ject, of the Congress, of.the societies conducting it, and Of the country. To realize this ideal, he found that it would be nec essary almost to reconstruct the entire work. A few papers were in such finished literary form that it was not necessary even to cross a t or dot an i but most of the papers needed more or less chiseling and polishing, some had to be rewritten by the authors, and still others had to be rewritten by the editor, while there were many gaps in the program which had to be filled. In filling the gaps, where the original appointee failed to supply the desired article, the interest of some able man in each special line was enlisted, and some of the brightest and most timely articles in the book are the result.
