Tachado de plagiario por "Noches de Infamia", una película consagratoria, permite acercarnos a la realidad delirante de un país que simboliza los peores males de América Latina, un país en desintegración porque la ignorancia generalizada, la inexistencia de un liderazgo político y la corrupción hecha sistema, lo llevó al suicidio político de una región, América Latina, históricamente por su arcaica irracionalidad, su primitivismo político, por sufrir dictaduras de todo tipo, gobernantes demagogos, incapaces, improvisados, corruptos o ignorantes, populismos empobrecedores, donde las leyes son quimeras y el robo a saco del Tesoro Público es la mas extendida tradición; por tales males y verdades, muchas repúblicas latinoamericanas son solo "repúblicas bananeras". Y en la imaginaria Costromo, en una marcha de la locura, al abismo, decidieron suicidarse. Suicidio colectivo decidido con insensatez, como tripulantes de una gigantesca Nave de los Necios, por las mayorías ignorantes y analfabetas, manipuladas en su pobreza material, moral y cognitiva por inescrupulosos políticos, mercenarios propagandistas, falsos intelectuales y codiciosos empresarios dueños de poderosos medios de comunicación, y las minorías de pretenciosos analfabetas funcionales, pretendida "élite intelectual", ignorante legión de charlatanes, oportunistas, adulantes, mercenarios y alfombra de los esbirros triunfantes, los sepultureros de la suicida República Bananera de Costromo, que a todas sus desgracias sumó la inexistencia de Fuerzas Militares, para impedir que el país cayera bajo el ignominioso control de agentes extranjeros, porque su evolución histórica borró a los militares, sustituidos, por voluntad de un perverso tirano, por Los Macheteros, creados a su imagen y semejanza, una plaga de esbirros uniformados perpetradores de los peores delitos, pretendida fuerza policial para el control del orden público interno y realmente viles tarados morales, más nefastos que sus serviles amanuenses, y de éstos malignos parásitos sociales nació la terrible tragedia de la traición. Esto explica el título de la novela, que explora con sinceridad las contradicciones, las oscuridades, las manchas y los escasos aciertos de un eterno inconforme, de un cineasta, un artista, un intelectual, un hombre de la cultura, pública e interesadamente al servicio del tirano de turno y su régimen de oprobio, y secreto conspirador, activo opositor clandestino, sumergido en sus graves contradicciones, conflictos, dudas, egoísmos y limitaciones e inmerso en una profunda crisis existencial; y la realidad vergonzosa de un país agonizante, que parece no tener otro futuro que la disolución, entre la bestial represión, la miseria generalizada, las hambrunas, la destrucción espiritual y material, el largo yugo de una tiranía bajo control extranjero y el masivo éxodo de sus pobladores a tierra ajena, a ganar el amargo pan del destierro, nutriendo también las irrefutables pruebas de nuestros fracasos, las Marchas o Caravanas del Hambre que pasan por el infernal Tapón del Darién rumbo a Estados Unidos, porque ya no existe una Ítaca a la que regresar, porque Costromo creyó en los cantos de sirena de unos falsos salvadores de la patria, quienes siempre pensaron en saquearla, traicionarla y venderla. Costromo fue conquistado, subyugado y vive un vertiginoso proceso de destrucción, su propia vorágine, no por perder una guerra en los campos de batalla ante un ejército enemigo, como Persépolis, Cartago, Numancia o Palmira, sino por el triunfo de la traición de sus hijos mas desnaturalizados, viles y criminales, sus peores enemigos: Los Macheteros. ¿Todo es ficción, imaginación, pesadillas? ¿O es una novela en clave?¿Existe realmente Costromo? ¿Dónde? ¿Existen Los Macheteros?
