Leopoldo Alas, apodado Clarín, fue un escritor y jurista español. Catedrático primero en la Universidad de Zaragoza y más tarde en la de Oviedo, se desempeñó como crítico literario en la prensa periódica de la época, desde donde atacó con punzantes artículos a muchos literatos contemporáneos.Menos ponderada que La Regenta, la obra es uno de esos lingotes de metal precioso que, con harta munificencia, nos legó el Siglo de Oro universal de la novela, que es el siglo diecinueve. Emma Valcárcel, "hija única, mimada", como se nos presenta desde la primerísima línea, se enamora del escribiente de su padre, Bonifacio Reyes. El idilio es bruscamente cercenado por el viejo Valcárcel. Años después, ya huérfana y en posesión de su cuantiosa herencia, se acuerda de su antiguo amor, al que rescata de su destino en México y con el que matrimonia rápidamente. En seguida comprende que el idealizado marido tiene poco que ver con sus deliquios. Bonifacio, por otra parte, sin querer llamarle calzonazos (así lo denomina en su fuero interno alguno de sus convecinos), es hombre acomodaticio, aunque no carece de recursos, los cuales explota domésticamente su esposa, refugiada en eso que podríamos denominar enfermedad imaginaria. Sin desvelar lo que sucede a continuación, sí podemos decir que Bonifacio, o Bonis, como le llama, sin asomo de cariño, su mujer, éste por un lado, y Emma, por el otro, irán sumiéndose en un romanticismo apolillado, extraído de las noveluchas del momento y de una sesgada y ratonil concepción del arte, lo que ocasiona indudable merma en la hacienda familiar. El médico don Basilio, uno de los varios que acuden al lecho de la enferma o, por mejor decir, hipocondríaca esposa, el tío y administrador, don Juan Nepomuceno, que lo ve todo y también lo calla todo, el primo Sebastián y la caterva de parientes, que forman, por decirlo así, parte del decorado, pero que acusan indudable influencia sobre Emma, tenores, sopranos, coristas y músicos en general, algún cura de montaña, Eufemia, la criada... integran todos ellos un fresco provinciano, pintado mediante el humor, la ironía y el sarcasmo, también con cinismo triste y compasivo, valga la paradoja. Bonifacio siempre ha querido perpetuarse en su hijo, el que no viene, pero que termina acudiendo a la convocatoria inconsciente de su padre... Obra deliciosa, en fondo y forma, en la estela directísima de Cervantes.
