About the Book

Joel war ein alttestamentlicher Prophet, über sein Leben und seine Geschichte ist wenig bekannt. Was bekannt ist, ist der Name seines Vaters Petuel. Seine Prophezeiungen wurden in Jerusalem gesprochen. Sein Leben muss in Juda stattgefunden haben. Er war kein Priester, aber er hatte ein großes Interesse am Tempel und denen, die darin dienten. Seine Prophezeiungen waren an das Volk gerichtet.
Das Buch Joel wurde zu einer unbekannten Zeit geschrieben. Auch der Zeitraum seines Dienstes wird in Frage gestellt. Es mag gewesen sein, als König Joasch (835-796 v. Chr.) noch ein Kind war. Joel bedeutet "JHWH ist Gott". Sie prophezeit die Herabkunft des Heiligen Geistes und verbindet das Wirken Gottes im AT mit der Entstehung der Kirche im NT. Es zeigt den intensiven Wunsch Gottes, die Intimität mit seinem ganzen Volk zu erhalten. Joel rief sie auf, sich ihm zuzuwenden. Er beschreibt eine Heuschreckenplage (Joel 1,1-20), die nacheinander in Scharen von beängstigendem Ausmaß angriff, die die Rinde der Feigenbäume, die Weizenfelder, Weinberge und Obstgärten verschlang und das Material für die Opfer der Priester auslöschte. Die Plage ist ein Symbol für den göttlichen Zorn und seine Strafe gegen die Sünde. Die Naturkatastrophen, die in Kapitel 1 erwähnt werden, sind eine bildliche Sprache, die sich auf ausländische Feinde bezieht, die Juda verwüsten würden, auf ein eindringendes Heer, assyrisch oder babylonisch (Joel 2:1-11).
Die Juden sollten am Tag des Zorns Gottes, d.h. am Tag seines Gerichts, trauern (Joel 1,13-16). Der Prophet erwähnt mehrmals den Tag des Herrn, d.h. den Tag, an dem er sich erhebt, um sein Gericht auszuführen. Doch es ist nie zu spät für die Umkehr, und es ergeht ein neuer Aufruf zum besonderen Gottesdienst im Tempel, sowohl für die Priester als auch für das Volk (Joel 1,13-16 vgl. Joel 2,12-17). Die Verwüstung durch die Heuschrecken wird dann durch die Fülle ersetzt, die der Herr durch die Ausgießung des Geistes (Jl 2: 18-27) bereitstellen wird (Jl 2: 28-32 - der Früh- und Spätregen), die sich am Pfingsttag erfüllt hat (Apg 2: 17-21); die Naturerscheinungen können apokalyptische Bedeutung haben (Jl 2: 30-32; vgl. Offb 6: 12-13). So wird nach der Buße die Wiederherstellung des Volkes kommen. In Joel 3: 8 erwähnt der Herr den Namen eines Volkes, der Sabäer, und bezieht sich damit auf die ersten Stammväter eines Bezirks in Äthiopien. Ein weiteres interessantes Zitat findet sich in Joel 3: 18, wo der Prophet von einem Wasserbrunnen spricht, der aus dem Haus des Herrn kommen und das Tal Schittim (oder Tal der Akazien) bewässern wird.
