About the Book

Student-Owned Learning: It's more than the teaching; it's about the learning contains a repository of the authors' in-depth experience working authentically with classroom teachers. The information described in this book demonstrates the competencies that teachers have requested and provides them with ideas to lead their students to own their learning. This book covers areas that produce a student-owned classroom, including passion in teaching, curriculum development, strengthening student achievement, engagement approaches, and assessment. The main difference in this book as opposed to others is that it will propel teachers to creating student-led learning by following the varied collection of researched-based ideas. This book encompasses several integral educational assumptions that will prompt educators to build a deeper understanding on the journey to increasing student achievement.
About the Author: Debra Kennedy, a thirty-three-year educational veteran, is the owner of The Professional Learning Curve, LLC. As a consultant and educational coach, Kennedy works for the Ohio Department of Education training teachers and administrators around the state in the teacher evaluation system, the principal evaluation system, and the electronic teacher-principal evaluation system. As a curriculum auditor for Curriculum Management Systems, Inc., Kennedy works with districts on aligning their curriculum. She has presented at several venues, including the national convention for NWEA, state conventions for OAESA, and local Principal Academies over the work of Dr. John Hattie. Currently, Kennedy is a curriculum consultant for a local school district, and maintains professional development contracts with multiple school districts in Ohio. A recent trip to observe the educational system in China energized Kennedy to continue to promote the importance of instructing all students to meet their needs. and Angela Smith is in her thirty-second year in education. Smith earned her National Board Certification in AYA English Language Arts, an Ohio Master Teacher Designation, and in 2007, she was awarded Teacher of the Year for Stark County, Ohio. In the last four years, Smith co-authored and administered three sizable educational grants for the district in which she worked until the spring of 2016. Additionally, she presented at several conferences, including the Ohio Educational Technology Conference, the annual conferences for the Association for Literacy and Education Researchers, and the Ohio Confederation of Teacher Education Organizations. Currently, Smith is an instructional coach for High Schools That Work and Making Middle Grades Work, and she is an adjunct professor for Walsh University, where she teaches freshmen composition. Smith has a passion for assisting teachers to increase student achievement; in fact, she has written extensively on this subject. In 2015, Smith co-authored a journal article, Agile PD: Innovative Approaches to Professional Development. Most recently, she has been collaborating with Kennedy on this work, Student-Led Learning: It's More Than the Teaching-It's About the Learning.
