About the Book

How can classroom technology devices be used to increase student motivation and engagement? Choice-based assessments, classroom activities in which students are given some element of choice in how they meet defined learning objectives, may provide the answer. This book is based upon a comprehensive, peer-reviewed research study of the phenomenon of student choice in classrooms with 1:1 technology devices through the perceptions of students and teachers in high school classrooms in Maine. A particular focus of this study is to make sense of the variety of ways that student choice can occur, as well as how technology can facilitate the presence of choice.
About the Author: Joshua Ottow's prior research on Maine schools was cited in the book "From Schoolhouse to Schooling System: Maine Public Education in the 20th Century," Donaldson, G. (2016). Joshua's other publications include the ASCD Journal of Maine Education, Volume 26, "Teaching Chinese Language to the 21st Century Student" and "Implementing High School Emergency Preparedness While Staying True to Your Culture," for the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), September, 2013. In 2014, Joshua delivered the keynote TED Talk at the Maine Restorative Justice Conference at Bates College. Joshua received a Doctorate in Education in Educational Leadership from the University of Maine in December, 2016. He has a Master of Science in Education from the University of Southern Maine and a Bachelor of Science in History from The University of Wisconsin, Eau Claire. Joshua has been a public school administrator for 10 years. He is currently the Principal of Mt. Ararat Middle School in Topsham, Maine. Prior to becoming a school leader, Joshua served in AmeriCorps in San Jose, California, where he was was Program Director of the Young Heroes Program, City Year, Inc. There, he taught a citizenship, leadership, and community service curriculum to middle school students in the Sunnyvale/Santa Clara communities. Following this, he was a history teacher at Mt. Ararat High School, Topsham, Maine. Joshua served as a high school Assistant Principal at Mt. Ararat High School and Yarmouth High School, Maine. In 2014, Joshua was named the Maine Middle/High School Assistant Principal of the Year by the National Association of Secondary School Principals in Washington DC.
