Dieser Frage widmet Bertrand Russel ein eigenes Kapitel in einer ersten einfachen Auseinandersetzung mit der Erkenntnistheorie Problems of Philosophy (1912, dt. Probleme der Philosophie). Hierin bezeichnet Russell als eine der Hauptaufgaben der Philosophie das Ordnen und Organisieren von Wissen mit dem Ziel des Ausschlusses von Zweifeln. Diesen frühen philosophischen Standpunkt bezeichnet er selbst als analytischen Realismus. Realismus versteht sich im Sinne von nichtmentalen unabhängigen Enitäten, unabhängig vom erkennenden Subjekt, aus denen sich die Welt zusammensetzt. Das Subjekt tritt in erkenntnismäßige Relationen zu den Gegenständen der Welt. Der Akt der Erkenntnis verändert diese Relationen nicht, denn diese sind extern. Analytisch ist Russells Realismus dadurch, dass das Komplexe in Abhängigkeit zum Einfachen steht und nicht umgekehrt. Ein Objekt bleibt unverändert, ob als Teil eines komplexen Objekts oder nicht. Ob wir Teile oder Ausschnitte der Welt erkennen, das Objekt bleibt unverändert, eine Verfälschung ist nicht möglich. Russell sieht hinter den vagen und unbestimmten Alltagserscheinungen eine höhere, genau bestimmtere und präzisere Welt, deren Gegenstände und Relationen ebenso genau und präzise bestimmt werden können. Die Welt ist für den frühen Russell eine logische Welt. Diese hat eine logische Struktur, die allerdings erst durch die logische Analyse gefunden werden muss, denn an der Oberfläche liegen Vagheit und Unbestimmtheit. Erst im Laufe seiner späteren Arbeit verabschiedet sich Russell allmählich von seinem logischen Weltbild, indem er eingesteht, dass die logische Struktur der Welt allererst durch große begriffliche Anstrengungen erfordernde Analysen herausgearbeitet werden muss, um schließlich sehr
