About the Book

The story revolves around Goy, a bright and energetic young boy growing up in a refugee camp. His father, Deng, works hard to provide for the family, but the conditions are harsh. Goy's adventurous spirit and curiosity set him apart, making his father hopeful for a better future despite the challenges.

Before arriving at the refugee camp, Deng, Nyakhor, and their children lived a life marked by hardship. A skilled carpenter, Deng tirelessly worked to provide for his family amidst difficult circumstances. Their journey to the Kakuma refugee camp in Kenya was fraught with challenges, but their determination to survive and hope for resettlement kept them going.
Life in the Kakuma camp was tough, with limited resources and opportunities. Deng found work assisting the cooks to support his family while Nyakhor cared for the children. Their hope for a better future was symbolized by a lottery ticket given to Deng by his friend Jadea.

The family's resettlement to the United States brought new challenges. Adapting to life in Omaha, Nebraska, was difficult due to cultural differences and the realities of inner-city life. Goy, in particular, struggled with these changes. He faced multiple adversities, including a brutal attack by a group of boys. This incident propelled him towards gang life, seeking strength and protection. His association with Davis and his gang marked a significant turning point, introducing Goy to a world of violence and crime. While gang life provided some safety, it also brought numerous challenges and risks.
Goy's life took a dramatic turn when he was detained in juvenile detention. During his time there, he gained a new perspective on life, realizing the importance of making better choices. His eventual release marked a pivotal moment as he was determined to stay out of trouble and build a better future.

Upon his return, Goy faced the harsh realities of his neighborhood, struggling to avoid the dangerous influences around him. He reconnected with old acquaintances and contemplated his future, considering options like the Job Corps program to better his circumstances. Goy's determination to escape the cycle of poverty led him to apply and be accepted into Job Corps, a government program offering free GEDs and trade skills. At Job Corps, Goy thrived, developing skills and confidence and graduating at the top of his class.

Goy's success story inspired many in his old neighborhood. Upon returning, he shared his experiences and the opportunities offered by Job Corps, encouraging others to follow in his footsteps. His story became a beacon of hope, illustrating the transformative power of resilience and determination.

This manuscript is a powerful tale of survival and the pursuit of a better future, and it has stuck with me. 'STREETS AWAY FROM CIVIL WAR' is a compelling story with a strong central character and a powerful message. The themes of hope, resilience, and the quest for a better life resonate deeply, making it a story worth telling and reading
