Dazu wird im ersten Schritt das strategische Management als Unternehmensführungskonzept vorgestellt. Im nächsten Schritt werden die Einzelheiten der Fußballbranche analysiert. Die Wirkungszusammenhänge ökonomisch denkender Unternehmen im Sport werden untersucht, um relevante Erfolgsfaktoren identifizieren zu können. Die Situationen und Gegebenheiten unterscheiden sich stark, so dass aus einer übergeordneten für alle Vereinigungen geltenden Perspektive argumentiert wird. Zum Abschluss dieser Arbeit wird ein Fazit über den Nutzen des strategischen Denkens im Fußball gezogen. Der Umsatz der DFL Deutsche Fußball Liga (DFL) hat sich im letzten Jahrzehnt, losgelöst von der makroökonomischen Situation, auf nunmehr über zwei Milliarden Euro mehr als verdoppelt (vgl. DFL, 2014a). Die Fußballbranche ist mittlerweile zu einem bedeutenden Zweig der Unterhaltungsindustrie mit nicht mehr zu vernachlässigender ökonomischer Relevanz geworden. Umsatz und Kostenvolumina einzelner Vereine sind höher als die von vielen mittelständischen Unternehmen. Transferzahlungen, Gehälter und zum Teil auch die Schulden der Vereine im Profifußball sind für viele Leute kaum noch zu erklären. Die rasante Entwicklung soll die Relevanz einer eingehenden Analyse verdeutlichen. Weiterhin nimmt der Fußball auch in Bezug auf seine gesellschaftliche Bedeutung eine Ausnahmestellung ein. Nur die National Football League NFL in Amerika verzeichnet höhere Zuschauerzahlen als die deutsche Bundesliga.
