Es gibt Stimmen, die behaupten, dass Mischkonzerne die Marktregeln durch Quersubventionen einzelner Geschäftsbereiche unterlaufen würden, um auf diese Weise Konkurrenten vom Markt zu verdrängen. Auf der anderen Seite sagt man ihnen nach, sie seien aufgrund der breitgestreuten Aktivitäten zu wenig spezialisiert und deshalb weniger leistungsfähig als fokussierte Unternehmen. Anhand der General Electric Company versucht die vorliegende Seminararbeit, dieser Kritik entgegen zu wirken. Im Zentrum dieser Arbeit steht dabei ein Transformationsprozess, der 1981 durch den damals neu ernannten Chief Executive Officer John F. Welch eingeleitet wurde. Um die Notwendigkeit der Veränderung des Unternehmens zu verstehen, setzt sich Kapitel 2 mit den Anfängen der General Electric Company bis hin zum Jahr 1981 auseinander. Ziel ist es, einen Eindruck über die Größe des Unternehmens zu vermitteln und die umfangreichen Tätigkeitsfelder darzustellen. Kapitel 3 stellt den neuen Mann an der Spitze von GE vor, der das Unternehmen ab April 1981 für die folgenden 20 Jahre führte und dessen Ideen und Leitmotive maßgeblich zum Erfolg des Konzerns beigetragen haben. Anschließend wird ein ausführlicher Blick auf den oben angesprochenen Transformationsprozess geworfen. Dieser gliedert sich in 3 Perioden. Aufgrund der entschlossenen und konsequenten Umsetzung der eingeführten Maßnahmen wird in der Literatur von Wellen gesprochen. Dieser Begriff wird in dieser Arbeit beibehalten, da er sehr passend erscheint. Kapitel 4 beschreibt die erste Welle, die sich durch die strukturelle Reform der Aufbauorganisation kennzeichnet.
