About the Book

This is the author's story of faith, hope and love as he learns to understand that God loves him, a homosexual priest. It is not a memoir or autobiography, but rather it is the author's account of how over the years he has dealt with the fact that he is a homosexual who is afraid that it is not proper for a priest to be a queer. It takes him a long time to get over the fear. It took him a long time to learn to be honest about himself. He wonders why it took him so long to be honest about himself. In addition to answering these questions, the other purpose of the book is to attempt to help other gay and lesbian people who are wrestling with the same questions. One of the hopes of this book is to take the author's experience and use it to help initiate a process of change in the hearts and minds of the Vestries and Search Committees of parishes looking for a new Vicar or Rector, and also a change in the hearts and minds of people responsible for hiring decisions in church institutions and Dioceses around the country. It is the hope of this book to support the change in acceptance of others that is surely coming over the church and over the world.
About the Author: The author graduated from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, received an STB degree from Berkeley at Yale Divinity School in New Haven, CT. He was ordained to the priesthood on June 29, 1963. His first church assignment was to serve as Vicar of Galloway Memorial Episcopal Church in Elkin, NC. In 1964 he met with Dr. Martin Luther King in St. Louis who recommended that he, a white priest, could effectively serve Negroes living in the black ghetto in Washington, DC. He took this recommendation to heart and was hired by Bishop Paul Moore to serve as Vicar of a black mission church in Washington. In 1970 he became what was called a worker priest, having a full time secular job and working part time in the church. His secular jobs included: Associate Executive Director of the Washington Urban League, Chief, Office of Public Affairs, National Capital Planning Commission, and physician recruiter for Kron Medical and JC Nationwide. One of the highlights of his church career was to be selected by his bishop to attend the 2008 Lambeth Conference in Canterbury, England, and stand in support of homosexuals around the world and gay issues in the Episcopal Church, and in the United States. After many years he has now come out of the closet and is very open about being a flaming queer.
