About the Book

This is a series of stories from the 'olden days' for my grandson Harry. It tells Harry what it was like to be me from the late forties in Tasmania until the late eighties in England. The book is listed as requiring 'Parental Guidance' for I have pulled no punches and you will be transported back in time to a world where a young, determined Aussie girl suffers the trials and tribulations that most of us endure when growing up in a strange and varied world full of interesting people and places. You will follow the path of this little Australian girl who demanded to learn the piano at the age of six and went on to make music teaching her career in England. Eating witchetty grubs, being attacked by jack jumpers, developing a fascination for the history of the Tasmanian Aborigines and a disastrous piano performance were experiences that she left behind as she boarded a rickety boat to seek her fortune on the other side of the world. Coming to terms with the quaint idiosyncrasies of the English and their language produced hilarious episodes in the classroom as she created a new life for herself in her newly adopted country. She married an Englishman and family life after the birth of two daughters was momentarily idyllic until Harry's Granddad John developed dementia. Harry learns about what his Granddad John was like before he became ill and the book comes to a close when we reach stories of his mum, the youngest daughter of Harry's Granddad John and Nanna Roe (the author).
About the Author: Nanna Roe (Dr Rosemary Westwell) is a British teacher/writer who came from Australia in 1971 and after a varied career including selling bikinis in Harrods, and working in Madame Tussaud's, she finally settled as a teacher with her British husband in Cambridgeshire. After the birth of the second child, her husband began to show signs of dementia and he is now in a care home. The difficulties she had with his care inspired her to write a novel based on her experiences: 'John, Dementia and Me'. She has two daughters and six grand children who live in the UK. While coping with her difficulties, she acquired five university degrees (in music, the arts and education) and completed her PhD in 2007 on 'The Development of Language Acquisition in a Mature Learner'( which is available free on: http: //eprints.ioe.ac.uk/48/) Other publications, including ' 'Out of a Learner's Mouth', a humorous account of her language learning experiences in Spain, 'Teaching Language Learners', a book of suggestions and ideas for teaching languages, especially English, 'Twenty Tips for Teaching IGCSE ESL', a book of ideas and suggestions for teaching English as a Foreign or Second Language, 'The Spelling Game', a book of ideas for teaching spelling and 'A Close Look at Unseen Poetry, a book on poetry analysis . 'Spontaneous Survival Lessons in English' and 'Activities to Engage with The Woman in White and The Lady in the Lake' and resource material on John Donne are available on http: //zigzageducation.co.u
