About the Book

Florence Holbrook (1897 - 1932) è stata un'educatrice nelle scuole di Chicago per oltre 50 anni e un'autrice di storie per bambini. Partecipò attivamente al movimento per la pace durante i primi anni del XX secolo. Fu membro della piccola delegazione Americana, capeggiata da Jane Addams, partecipò alla Conferenza Internazionale delle Donne nel 1913 in Olanda, e fu presente anche alla Ford Peace Expedition del 1915. Raccolse i racconti popolari di molte culture diverse e li riportò nei suoi libri. In particolare, sono rimasta fortemente colpita dal suo libro The Book Of Nature Myths del 1902, in cui la Holbrook ha raccolto 54 racconti dedicati alla natura, provenienti da diverse culture popolari tra cui quella indiana, greca e giapponese.La prima caratteristica che ho trovato subito affascinante è il costante senso di Pace che culla ognuna di queste brevi storie, quella pace per cui lei stessa si impegnò con decisione. Nonostante in alcuni di questi racconti si parli anche di "sangue" e "morte", l'amorevole penna della Holbrook lascia emergere una grande serenità che lega tutte le storie.Altra presenza costante e fondamentale è il Manito, Il Grande Spirito della cultura dei nativi americani che veglia sugli uomini e sugli animali, a volte interagendo come Deus Ex Machina che subentra per risolvere le situazioni più difficili, altre volte partecipando come personaggio attivo nella storia.È stato interessante notare che anche nelle culture antiche degli altri paesi del mondo, esistono storie senza tempo che rispondono in maniera simile alle domande che sia i bambini che gli uomini si pongono da sempre. Ed ecco che in queste storie ritroviamo animali parlanti, avvenimenti fantastici, personificazione degli eventi naturali e molto altro di familiare. Tutte queste storie spiegano molti Perché della natura, ci raccontano molte Prime Volte, insegnando ai bambini la bontà, l'onestà e il rispetto per l'altro, e facendo riflettere l'adulto che può carpire cosa si cela tra le righe di ogni racconto.Nella traduzione, ho cercato di non stravolgere troppo il testo originale per dare sia al bambino che all'adulto la possibilità di fruire fedelmente delle atmosfere raccontate.Non vi resta che iniziare.
