Lo ho sempre creduto essere piu naturale più facile e più sicuro il partirsi dalle esperienze e dalle elementari vc rità in esse scoperte, e dalle dimostrazioni matematiche che le riducono a principii onde dipoi salire alle dottrine metafisiche e compiere in queste la scienza piuttoslochè partire dalle generali idee di questa e mettersi poi a stu diare la natura inceppati dalle regole che dalle logiche e dalle metafisiche discendono. Il lungo viaggio che dee fare la mente umana dal vero sensibile al vero ideale ed eterno ossia dalla ragione e colla ragione alla fede è molto piu di ritto e spedito se illuminato dalla sperienza è condotto in fine alle cose di pura fede, nella quale la scienza che ha già acquistata la sua costruzione si completa. Ma cominciare la scienza da questo punto più alto ed estremo come facevano gli scolastici, avveniva che si fabbricava per aria la cupola prima di costruire il tempio, e che in questo si doveva entrare scendendo per quella e non per le porte del tempio medesimo. Fu il Galileo che costruì questo tempio, e chi legge le sue opere assiste a questa grandiosa costruzione sulla quale posata poi quella cupola si mostrò la maestà dell'edilizio e la scienza di Dio vi si completò in armonica connessione con quella della natura, dove non i soli filosofi mi tutti gli uomini vi ebbero libera entrata, e la piena soddisfazione deli intendimento loro Cotesto nuovo edifizio g.-lilejano fu innalzato quindici anni prima che Bacone da l'erulamio pubblicasse i suoi trattati sul Metodo induttivo. I materiali dell' edifizio del Galilei furono la scoperta della legge della caduta de' gravi, l'isocronismo delle oscillazi3ni del pendolo, l'invenzione del termometro, il nunzio sidereo. Il trattato de' corp1 galleggianti, le osservazioni delle mac chie solari, l invenzione del telescopio e del microscopio la scoperta delle fasi di Venere e dei satelliti di Giove. Che e il Galileo invece (li questi scoprimenti e di queste espe rienze avesse composto e pubblicato un libro di nuova filo sofia della Natura, gli scolastici gli avrebbero scagliato contro tante obbiezioni e tanti sofismi, che ajutati dall'im mensa autorità loro e da' loro artifizii avrebbero tagliato le gambe all'andare del libro, annullata per chi sa quant'altro tempo la benefica influenza del nuovo insegnamento. Invece l'improvviso e sfolgorante bagliore di quelli scuoprimenti li gclò li sconcerto per modo, che come quel millione di formi che che dianzi su e giù sullo stretto sentiero che nella polvc si erano solcato discorrevano balde e sicure, se taluno un altro ne incrocia si che il pumo rimanga spezzato, elleno indietreggiano, e si urtano. E si sparpagliano, e la buca dove tutte si recavano smarriscono e più non trovano, cosi il sodalizio scolastico restò contristato e muto dinnanzi i nuovi esperimenti; e da questi venne fuori tutt'altra filo sofia che la loro, cioè i fatti posti nel trono. Troppo lunga età già usurpato dalle vuote parole. Sicchè il libro di Bacone che venne dopo trovò già disperse quelle turbe di filosofanti, la nuova filosofia della natura potè stabilmente insediarsi e cominciare il suo regno. Ma con ciò non fu perduta, anzi in meglio assicurata la metafisica. E Galileo stesso cel dice richiamandoci spes so a questa sua sublime sentenza: Le nostre operazioni.
