About the Book

Contrary to what they claim, procrastination is not always a sign of laziness for most people. In actuality, we frequently work very hard for extended periods of time, right before our deadlines, when we delay. We can't be lazy if we work hard and long hours; that's the reverse of lazy.

Thus, why do we put things off, and, more importantly, what can we do to stop ourselves?
As previously mentioned, some claim that they put things off because they are lazy. Some say they "work best" under pressure and "do better" when they put things off. I invite you to consider these explanations critically. Almost everyone who says this has a propensity to put off significant academic tasks that they have planned, carried out, had time to review, etc. before the deadline. They are therefore unable to compare the conditions under which they perform best. You cannot truly claim that you "perform better" under pressure if you virtually never really tackle your duties strategically and you almost always put things off.

Others still claim they enjoy the "rush" of finishing tasks and meeting deadlines. However, this is frequently what they say when they are not meeting the deadline. They claim that this works both before and after cramming, when they have forgotten the unpleasant effects of postponing, like weariness, disappointment from not living up to their own expectations, and anxiety and tension from having to put their lives on hold for extended periods of time. Not to mention that waiting until the last minute greatly increases the likelihood that something will go wrong (such as falling sick or experiencing a computer issue) and you won't be able to earn the grade you want. Therefore, even though procrastinating can be detrimental to us and raise our chances of failure, we nevertheless do it. Why is that?
In addition, procrastination might have deeper, more intricate psychological roots than just a lack of time management abilities.

Schools that continuously evaluate their students, particularly in college, where grades are important and performance can have a significant impact, can exacerbate these dynamics. In actuality, students frequently use procrastination as a form of self-defense. If you put things off, for instance, you'll always have the justification of "not having enough" time if you don't succeed, so you never have to doubt your abilities

Given the amount of pressure students face to do well on assignments, like papers, it makes sense that they would prefer to avoid it and put off doing their job.
