Die Selbstzundung bei Ottomotoren, oder auch HCCI-Verbrennung (Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition), stellt neben den bekannten Verbrennungsverfahren (Otto, Diesel) ein drittes eigenstandiges Brennverfahren dar. Es basiert auf einer dezentralen Reaktionseinleitung und dem Vorhandensein mehrerer Verbrennungszentren im Brennraum und nicht auf einer deflagrativen Gemischumsetzung. Diese Art der Umsetzung einer thermischen Explosion ist aus den Grenzbereichen (Klopfen) der ottomotorischen Verbrennung bekannt. Zum besseren Verstandnis werden Analysen der bekannten otto- und dieselmotorischen Verbrennungsverfahren und die allgemeinen Zusammenhange des alternativen Verbrennungskonzeptes vorangestell. Es werden die Mechanismen der Selbstzundungsprozesse erlautert und Veroffentlichungen im Hinblick einer moglichen Steuerung der Selbstzundung ottomotorischer Kraftstoffe zusammengestellt. Zur experimentellen Verifizierung der Steuerkonzepte werden sowohl Voruntersuchungen an einem 2-Takt-Einzylindermotor als auch Untersuchungen an einem optischen Einzylinderaggregat durchgefuhrt. Im Hauptteil der Dissertation wird die Steuerung der Selbstzundung unter realen ottomotorischen Randbedingungen bei einem relevanten Verdichtungsverhaltnis von epsilon; CAI (Controlled Auto Ignition); ICCI (Inhomogeneous Charge Compression Ignition). Das Konzept einer Zyklen-gesteuerten Abgasruckhaltung, kombiniert mit einer zu jedem Zeitpunkt variablen Direkteinspritzung des Kraftstoffes in den Brennraum, sind wesentliche Voraussetzungen zur Kontrolle der Selbstzundung. Im Vordergrund standen die Trennung der Reaktionseinleitung und des Reaktionsverlaufs und zielen auf die Grenzbereiche der Verbrennung. Unter Verwendung von handelsublichem Kraftstoff (ROZ=98), konnte die Kompressionszundung in einigen stationaren Kennfeldpunkten betrieben werden und einen Betriebsbereich zeigen, der den Teillastbereich weitestgehend abdeckt. Gegenuber der ottomotorischen Basis konnte eine Verringerung des Kraftstoffverbrauches und eine drastische Reduktion der NO_x-Emission nachgewiesen werden. Als obere Lastbegrenzung des Selbstzundungsbetriebes erwiesen sich steile Druckanstiege. Die untere Lastgrenze wurde durch einen Anstieg der HCund CO-Emissionen definiert und deutet auf eine instabile Verbrennung hin. Das Potential dieser alternativen Verbrennung wird bezuglich Wirkungsgraden und Emissionen gegenuber der ottomotorischen Verbrennung bewertet. Abgeschlossen wird die Arbeit mit den fur das HCCI-Verbrennungsverfahren ermittelten Kennfeldern bei einer Verdichtung von epsilon=12.
