Schon unsere Vorfahren konnten sich verständigen, lange bevor der Mensch das erste Wort geäußert hatte. Und auch Kinder verständigen sich sofort nach ihrer Geburt (und auch schon im Mutterleib) mit ihrer Umwelt. Und das, lange bevor sie zu sprechen beginnen. Aus diesen Gründen verwundert es kaum, dass der nonverbalen Kommunikation heutzutage von der Forschung eine gewichtige Rolle im zwischenmenschlichen Interaktions- und Verständigungsprozess zugemessen wird. So meint Michael Argyle, dass das menschliche Sozialverhalten nicht ohne eine Entwirrung des nonverbalen Systems zu verstehen ist. Dennoch konnten die recht einheitlichen Forschungsergebnisse bisher nichts daran ändern, dass die Bedeutung dieser nichtsprachlichen Form der Verständigung von den meisten Menschen noch immer in markanter Weise unterschätzt wird. Was wir sagen, scheint für die Meisten ausschlaggebend für die Reaktion des Gegenübers zu sein. Weniger die Art, wie wir etwas sagen. Wissenschaftler gehen heute davon aus, dass nur ca. 3 % der zwischenmenschlichen Kommunikation auf der rein sprachlichen Ebene abläuft. Bevor näher auf die nonverbale Kommunikation eingegangen wird, sollen zunächst einige Begriffe geklärt werden und dabei gleichzeitig eine Abgrenzung zur verbalen Kommunikation geschaffen werden. Beide Bereiche sind zwar eng miteinander verbunden, können aber auch eindeutig voneinander getrennt werden. Zuvor noch eine Anmerkung: mittlerweile wird der Begriff ′Kommunikation′ von den meisten Menschen wie selbstverständlich und oft in vollkommen verschiedenen Bedeutungen verwendet.
