Er basiert auf der Diskontierung der zukünftigen Cash-flows und der Einbeziehung der Parameter Zeit und Risiko (durch den WACC) und stellt somit ein Hilfsmittel zur Unternehmens- und zur Strategiebewertung einzelner Geschäftsbereiche dar. Diese Arbeit bietet Einblicke darüber, was Unternehmenswert bedeutet und wodurch er beeinflusst wird. Diese Information der Werttreiber des Shareholder Value ist für jedes Unternehmen sehr wichtig, denn erst wenn ein Manager weiß, was finanziellen Erfolg und Misserfolg auslöst und verursacht, hat er das nötige Wissen, um seine Firma auf den Weg zum Erfolg zu bringen. Im Anschluss werden Möglichkeiten erörtert, Unternehmen im Wettbewerb zu positionieren. Dabei liefert das Modell von Porter mit den generischen Strategietypen Kostenführerschaft, Differenzierung und Nischenstrategie interessante Aufschlüsse darüber, wie ein Unternehmen am Markt agieren und sich Wettbewerbsvorteile verschaffen kann. Empirische Ergebnisse zeigen, dass nicht die Positionierung alleine für den Erfolg eines Unternehmens verantwortlich ist. Viel wichtiger ist es, Kernkompetenzen zu entwickeln und strategische Einflussvariablen, wie relative Produktqualität, relative Produktdifferenzierung, die Qualität der Serviceleistungen oder Investitionen in Forschung und Entwicklung zu verbessern und somit zumindest einen Wettbewerbsvorteil zu schaffen. Die strategische Positionierung ist ein elementarer Teil der Unternehmensführung in jedem Unternehmen, vom Ein-Mann-Betrieb bis zum multinationalen Konzern, vor allem in der heutigen Zeit, die von Dynamik in den Märkten und auch im Umfeld geprägt ist.
