When Jessica Larkin leaves her beloved family farm, she discovers the incredible world that awaits, full of adventure and people ready to stand up to all kinds of injustice.
Jess isn't initially keen on leaving, though. She loves her family, their farm, and the lives they have carved out in the wilderness of New Hampshire. After her dear grandfather, Poppy, dies, she dreams of following in his footsteps and using the farm to train horses. Jess, however, is about to learn that the world finds a way in, and good times can't last forever.
Caught up in circumstances far beyond her control, Jess is whisked away to the bustling town of New Bedford. Compared to her staid existence back home, the movers and shakers of the city are bursting with ideas.
One of the biggest excitements in town is the abolitionist meetings. Jess is riveted by the speakers arguing for the abolition of slavery and the dangers many face as agents of the Underground Railroad.
Will Jess be the movement's newest recruit? Is this the path she is meant to walk? Or will Jess be consumed by the big world and its even bigger ideas?
About the Author: Sally Lee was born in Beverly, Massachusetts, and was raised in Deerfield, New Hampshire. After graduating high school, she attended the University of New Hampshire.
Lee devoted her time to raising her two children in Raymond, New Hampshire, and worked as a sports reporter and journalist for the Rockingham County News. During her time there, she received the New Hampshire Small Press Association Award.
After her children were grown, Lee went back to school and attended the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth. She graduated magna cum laude with an English major and an emphasis on creative writing. She taught English at Bristol Community College's MCAS Academy and English as a second language at Diman Regional Voc-Tech High School.
Lee has spent a happy fifteen years in her home on Massachusetts's sSouthcoast. She loves spending time with her two amazing granddaughters.
