About the Book

Any attempt to analyse the status of the girl child and women is bound to face many difficulties, certainly in case of Uttar Pradesh, where the field is marked by an extreme paucity of research. Therefore, the study was both a challenge and an opportunity to uncover the varied dimensions of the problem. The author has attempted an integrated approach to capture a succint yet objective picture of the phenomenon. In the initial portray the larger context of the state in which the girl child and the women are circumstanced. Therefore, the initial portion an attempt has been made to portion of the book provides a profile of Uttar Pradesh dealing with its physiography, natural resources, cultural milieu, demographic profile, economy and poverty alleviation measures taken by the central and the State Governments. This is followed by an account of life situation through successive stages in the life cycle of a girl child. In pursuing the life cycle, it was decided to start with life before and around birth. It is then proceeded by a discussion of infancy and early years followed by the state of girl child and leading to the portrayal of the adolescent girl. This represents an age group which has generally been neglected in development works but is of decisive importance for changing the situation of women and female children. What follows this is a detailed profile of women in Uttar Pradesh, where discrimination against women in all walks of life gets a sharp focus. All this leads to identification of priority areas if a normal and all round development of the girl child and women is aimed at. The study ends with a perspective of development based on past experience. Here an important role is envisaged for the NGOs and as a result voluntary sector has been dealt in some detail.
