Eigentlich sollte Rudi Meier, Kulturreporter bei einem großen deutschen Wochenmagazin, in London für eine Reportage über den ungebrochenen Mythos alter italienischer Geigen recherchieren. Nach einem Interview mit Erwin Machinger, einer schillernden Figur im illustren Zirkel der Händler mit wertvollen Musikinstrumenten, kommt aber alles ganz anders. Der Reporter sieht die Chance eine Violine wieder zu beschaffen, die vor zwei Jahren unter mysteriösen Umständen aus einem Innsbrucker Museum verschwunden ist. Das Instrument von 1682 ist das letzte Werk des genialen Tiroler Geigenbauers Jakob Stainer, bevor dieser vollständig im Irrsinn versank und wenig später starb. Und angeblich ist in dieser Geige eine Nachricht versteckt, die aber die Museumsleitung auf keinen Fall finden wollte. Warum? Rudi Meier sieht die Chance für eine große Story. Als Unterstützung hat ihm Machinger die Geigenbauerin und Musikwissenschaftlerin Leonie Hull vermittelt, eine Spezialistin für Jakob Stainer und seine Instrumente. In den nächsten fünf Tagen taucht er mit ihrer Hilfe immer tiefer in das faszinierende Leben Jakob Stainers ein, der in den unruhigen Zeiten des 17. Jahrhunderts Instrumente schuf, für die man noch 1775 in London den zehnfachen Preis einer Stradivari zahlte und dessen Geigen schon zu seinen Lebzeiten in großen Mengen gefälscht wurden. Jenes Jakob Stainer, der eine für seine Zeit überdurchschnittliche Bildung besaß, wohl längere Zeit in Venedig lebte, als gelegentlicher Raufbold aktenkundig wurde, zwischendurch als Ketzer eingesperrt war, im Wahnsinn endete - und sich bis zu seinem Tod weigerte, seine Kunst an andere weiterzugeben. Aber je näher die beiden der verschwundenen Geige kommen, desto mehr scheint Rudi Meier die Sache zu entgleiten.
