About the Book

English summary: The Ancient Greek polis is distinguished by the fact that alongside a degree of inertia one can also observe elements of dynamic change in both its cityscape and political organization. Indeed, the polis proved itself to be a very lively and active political unit within the Hellenistic kingdoms. Of particular interest is the interplay between urban form and social formation in all major areas of public as well as private life. Social, religious and political practices all display a remarkable adaptability, which are equally reflected in new urban structures. Such phenomena of tradition and innovation within the Hellenistic polis are the subject of the DFG's (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft) core program number 1209 "Die hellenistische Polis als Lebensform" (The Hellenistic polis as a way of life). This volume on urban culture presents the second set of research results developed within this interdisciplinary research network. Together, these detailed studies document the diversity, vitality and versatility of the Ancient Greek polis.
