Staat, Groaraum, Nomos das sind drei zentrale Themen Carl Schmitts, die in seinem Werk einander ablosen, wenn auch im Groaraum der Staat aufgehoben ist und der neue Nomos der Erde auf Groaraumen beruhen soll. Staat, Groaraum und Nomos besitzen auch eine gemeinsame Aufgabe: sie sollen aufhalten. Der Staat hat der bedrohlichen Invasion der menschlichen Individualitat zu widerstehen, die im Burgerkrieg ihre politisch gefahrlichste Auspragung erreicht; der Groaraum soll den Weg in einen universalistischen, den Zusammenhang von Ordnung und Ortung zerstorenden Nihilismus versperren; an dem noch zu findenden neuen Nomos der Erde, der sich aus einem Pluralismus voneinander abgegrenzter Groaraume ergibt, soll das Projekt der Einheit der Welt scheitern, das, unter dem scheinbar menschenfreundlichen Motto Pax et securitas, nur ein anti-christliches Projekt sein kann. Auffallend ist dabei die stets nachlassende Randscharfe, die von Stufe zu Stufe geringere juristische Erfaabarkeit dieser Schlusselbegriffe, die bereits so die sich steigernde Unordnung und Verwirrung des XX. Jahrhunderts anzeigen, dem Schmitt sich zunachst mit fester Gewiaheit, dann mit einer sich auf reale Entwicklungen stutzenden Zuversicht und endlich nur noch mit einer Hoffnung konfrontierte. Der vorliegende Band sammelt wichtige, z.T. schwer erreichbare Texte Carl Schmitts, zu denen der Herausgeber bibliographische, ideen- und zeitgeschichtliche Erlauterungen und Hinweise beisteuerte. Die Sammlung zeigt, daa Schmitts Groae weniger in seinen Antworten als in seinen Fragen und Fragestellungen liegt, hinter die auch dann nicht zuruckgegangen werden kann, wenn wir selbst die Antworten nicht besitzen. Der stille, kontemplative Carl Schmitt, der sein Wesen treffend beschrieb als gerauschlos und nachgiebig wie ein stiller Flua, wie die Mosel, tacito rumore Mosella, ging nicht den ihm vorgezeichneten Fluchtweg in die Kultur und den Asthetizismus, sondern stellte sich den Res dura des Politischen. Nicht zuletzt diese Spannung erklart die Anregungsfulle und den intellektuellen Reiz der hier wieder vorgelegten Studien und Aufsatze, die auch die Krise der Gegenwart zu erhellen vermogen.
