About the Book

English summary: Friedrich Reinhold Kreutzwaldt (1803-1882) is one of the fathers of Estonian language and literature. His work Kalevipoeg (Kalev's son) which goes back to the tradition of myths and legends still alive in Estonian culture has become the Estonian national epic and today still ranks as the most important collection of Estonian legends and folk songs ever written. Kreutzwald published fairy tales from the Virumaa homeland and campaigned for the Estonian language, which today still features many words that are the result of the writer's work. This volume for the first time publishes his complete and fully annotated correspondence with the Petersburg based Tibetologist, linguist and folklorist Anton Schiefner in its original form, often revealing their biting sense of humor. It illustrates the busy life of a country doctor for the poor who alongside his work tirelessly kept up his fight for the Estonian language. It is also the story of a friendship characterized by mutual respect and a sense of humor which deserves to be more than just a subordinate clause in literary history.
