About the Book

English summary: Overseas expansion brought European sailors, traders, missionaries, colonists and researchers into contact with a variety of languages that were previously unknown in Europe. For communication with non-European populations - beyond simple forms such as gift exchange and sign language - multilingual agents with the skills to also make strange rituals, worldviews, and systems of meaning understandable in the medium of language were crucial. Based on the philological studies of Christian missionaries, the colonial powers had - since the 19th Century - increasingly made efforts to scientifically classify non-European languages.
While colonial rule lead to the disappearance of many non-European languages, other languages such as the Malay language or Swahili gained new meaning as a form of communication. The many facets of communication between Europeans and non-Europeans are studied by the authors of this volume, who refer back to a meeting of the Association for Overseas History at the University of Bamberg, and are documented in a series of empirical case studies. German text.
