Wer hierzu einen Einblick in die wichtigsten Aspekte des Schulsports gewinnen will, sollte sich folglich ein grundlegendes Wissen aneignen. Haag und Mess beschreiben für Studierende des Sports für Lehramt folgendes: "Studierende in dem Fach Sport sollten das Studium mit der Erwartung aufnehmen, in differenzierten Studiengängen und Studienbereichen Qualifikationen für sportliches, wissenschaftliches, sozial-aktives und pädagogisch-unterrichtliches Handeln zu erwerben, um später Aufgaben in sportbezogenen Berufsfeldern erfolgreich lösen zu können." Neben den Themenbereichen zum Kenntniserwerb von Sportarten und deren sportartspezifischen Techniken und Taktiken, ist somit auch das Kennenlernen von Sporttheorien und -feldern (Bewegungs- und Trainingswissenschaften, Sportpsychologie und -soziologie) erforderlich.
