Zum Sport gehört - neben zahlreichen anderen begleitenden Erlösmodellen wie Merchandising, Sponsoring usw. - vor allem die mediale Verwertung und Vermarktung auf allen verfügbaren Kanälen. Insbesondere Fußball zählt dabei nicht nur als quotenrelevantes Programmangebot zu den beliebtesten TV-Sportarten weltweit, sondern wird auch in verschiedenen interaktiven Formen über die sog. "neuen Medien" erfolgreich vermarktet. Einen wesentliche Teil zu dieser Entwicklung trägt auch die Lizenzierung und Adaptation einzelner Sportarten als Videospiel bei, welche inzwischen in der Mediennutzung großer Teile der Gesellschaft nicht mehr wegzudenken sind. Insbesondere Fußball-Simulationen (Spielserie FIFA von EA Sports) zählen auch hier zu den meistabverkauftesten und weltweit beliebtesten Genres. Durch die detailgetreue Darstellung, die Gestaltung nach Elementen der TV- Übertragung und die Implementierung realistischer Daten und Faktoren scheinen die Grenzen zwischen der Inszenierung von realem und virtuellem Sport immer mehr zu verfließen. Über dieses Phänomen und seine möglichen Auswirkungen wird auch zunehmend diskutiert, wobei die populärwissenschaftliche und journalistische Aufbereitung bisher oftmals eher polarisierend zwischen den Extremen einer technischen und/oder ökonomischen Euphorie oder diffuser, kulturpessimistischer Angst angesiedelt zu sein scheint. Die akademische Forschung hingegen erschließt sich diesen Bereich nur zögerlich: Zwar gibt es zahlreiche medienpädagogische Analysen zu Videospielen aus Perspektive der Wirkungsforschung, jedoch bestehen bisher - trotz der erheblichen wirtschaftlichen Releva
